Advice on restraining Rat

Hola
My rat has developed an abscess and tonight is the night on which I am going to attempt performing these tasks, it will get messy.
I was just wondering if any of you guys have advice on how to restrain the rat during the process. I will have one helper, but I imagine either way it is going to take some persistance.

Try giving it some pot. That'll get it to stop moving. I've never had a hard time holding a rodent in my hand with a firm grip.

Might have to roll him up tight in a hand towel like a fat rat blunt...

Lol, I have more MXE than I could shake a stick at....but I'm not trying to scare the thing half-to-death. Marijuanan is indeed not out of the question though. Works for the Dr, gotta work even better for the patient!

I would just blow a little smoke to get him settled. It may be mean though. Most of my animals love it.

Not a bad idea. The abscess is on her shoulder, maybe if I could just restrain the back half of the body and back legs it would limit movement enough. It wouldn't be that bad if the process were to be a swift one, but from what it looks like this is going to take at least an hour, unless pus starts coming out after the first "hot-press".

you sure it's an abscess? if it is i would take it to the vet and have them lance it. you could do it yourself but getting a new, clean razor blade and some gauze strips soaked in iodine to pack the incision with when you're done releasing as much pus as possible, flush with a curved tipped syringe -- you can use peroxide or diluted iodine and then pack with your gauze. you will have to replace the gauze every couple days until the infection subsides and shows that it is healing from the inside out. this will keep the infection from recurring.

Try these steps:
1. Send rat to me (which I will subsequently feed to my cat). 2. Buy new rat.

I'm not trying to pay for a vet visit for a rat that only has about 2 more years of life left
The abscess shows the same characteristics as ones that commonly occur in pet Rats, or so I've read. She shows no sign of weakness, still eating, playing...Googling "rat scabby swelling" will bring up all sorts of results pointing towards signs of an abscess that has grown due to a growing infection from a bite or injury.
I'm fairly certain that it is just an abscess and not a tumor. She has had it for over a month and isn't showing any sign of discomfort, nor is she losing weight (which would occur if it was a tumor, for it would be draining her body of nutrients to survive).
I'm definitely not going to force any sort of wound manually and am hoping the "hot-pressing" will do the majority of the work for me.

depends on how bad the abscess is. you should have taken care of the wound when you first noticed it a month ago.

Haha. I have three cats, I'll save my postage cash for RC trades.

... I was hoping it would work itself out. It doesn't seem any worse than the ones mentioned by others. At first it was just a cyst, very small, but has now started to break the skin. I've been using topical antibiotics and it has since reduced in redness and increased in scabbing. I'm assuming this is somewhat of a positive reaction to treatment
I will no doubt be as sterile as possible

I had to roll a fat 'cat' blunt once to fix an abscess on my cats ear, took two towels... She didn't like the process too much, but a couple puffs in her face, she settled down pretty well...and no bites or scratches, either... . to Kitty . . .

I'm curious to know how the rat home surgery ended up... Did you get bit, snap its neck, feet it to your cat, or get its abscess to burst?

This sounds like animal cruelty to me. You dont pop an abscess, you lance it. On an anesthetized animal, mind you.

Yeah this is fucked up. I do commend ya OP for having your heart in the right place, though.
But Mr. Rat is probably going to need a few drinks after this one. And hard stuff, too. No light beer.
