Casing Problem :(
    #1586016 - 05/28/03 07:57 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Hi there... I have a small problem with my casing, and I figured some people on here might be able to help me out.... here we go...

about a week or so ago, I took 2 1 pint jars, that where fully colonized, broke em up, and made a case including: 1/2 inch of verm, on bottom, the myco on top of that, then another 1/2 of vermiculite...

2 days after i made it, i checked it and saw that some myco was already poping up, here and there... but since it has been about 2 weeks... ive seen nothing, no new growth, its still the same with no signs of rot or contaminations... its crazy.

any idea whats wrong? do i need to just give it more time?

your casing layer sounds too thick...straight verm casings suck anyways...mix it up with some coco coir

its not bogus it should work...mixed with coco coir just works better from what i've read here anyways I haven't tried it myself...so far I've just used potting soil and seems to work pretty good

There is a reason it may have stalled. One might be that its just colonizing in the middle for a stronger community of myc. Is the verm layers damp? did you allow air exchange? Its not bogus, its a perfectly good tek. You probably did something wrong. Dont mess with it though, messing with it will only cause stalling, contams, or overlay.

Bump, I cased two pans of 100% colonized rye over a week ago (not actualy sure how long its been) and I see a tiny little white fluff ball in one casing. I thought it was cobweb it was so faint but it isnt cause it would have spread all over by now. I cased with straight verm (moistened) and then sealed them in mycobags. Any ideas why there is no signs of further growth? There are no visible contams and they are in a incubator in the mid 80's.

Scratch the casing layer with some sterilized fork, mist , give plenty of air and some light.

I dunno about all that now .... I enjoy my Molasses ...... I think I'd go for a swim in some Molasses if someone filled their pool with it

But here's a question for everyone: Verm and Peat Moss or Verm and Coco Coir? Which one do you all think is the better mix?
