Possibly my first Marasmius find
    #1585215 - 05/28/03 02:01 PM (21 years, 30 days ago)

I am waiting on a spore print, but I think I may have found a small patch of Marasmius oreades. My book doesn't mention anything about the appearance of the gills, though, so I'm really not sure.

They were growing beneath a tree in someone's lawn in my neighborhood. The stem is very rigid and difficult to break. They also have a faint mushroomy smell. Here are the pics:

What do you guys think?

Those look right.

You should be able to wrap the stem around your finger without breaking it.

The spore print should be white to pale tan.

The top photo looks like you've only got a small segment of the complete fairy ring.

Happy mushrooming!

They were not in a ring; they were simply growing in a small patch near the base of a tree (I did not think to look what kind).  My book said they grow in patches as well as rings, though?

This is the third species I have found in three days!  I never knew my neighborhood could be so much fun!!

Thanks for the reply, ToxicMan.  I will post again with the results of the spore print for a more positive identification.

Peace!

You're right about the patches part. Looking at your photo it looks kind of like you've got a small part of a circle around the 4 o'clock area.

While these are edible, be careful that you don't eat any from a lawn somebody put some sort of pesticide on. There have been a number of serious poisonings from things like that.

Happy mushrooming!

The spore print was white, so I'm pretty sure this is Marasmius oreades!  I have no plans to eat any of them, though... I'm not willing to risk my life for the taste of them, even if I am fairly sure what they are!

By the way, I just got back from a walk in the woods where I came across a few HUGE patches of mushrooms growing in mulch.  I also found a few interesting single specimens that I have never seen before.  Luckily I had my digicam with me, and I got some nice pics which I will post sometime in the near future.  I'm working on getting spore prints and IDing some of the specimens right now.

I LOVE MUSHROOM HUNTING!!!!
