Colonization Gas Exchange?
    #15849000 - 02/22/12 06:28 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Will keeping colonized PF jars in a cupboard with closed doors stunt there growth from no gas exchange? Would opening up the doors once a day help them get more "air" and grow better. Should I keep them in a less enclosed space but at a cooler temperature or am I just fine?

Thanks....

Should be fine, I leave mine in a closet and check cakes every other day after growth has started =) what is your temperature in the cupboard?

Just put them on your shelf, they don't need to be enclosed.  Room temps are fine.

The cupboard temp is about 77-85 and If I were to leave them out they could go down as low as 60.....

:imwithstupid:
Also they should be getting some indirect light for best results.

Sure mushrooms need GE but its not a lot.  Less than 1 cubic foot a day

I am not purposely trying to enclose them, but putting them in the cupboard which is fairly small and closing the doors naturally encloses them fairly well.

I certainly have not enough experience to give advice, but from all I have read, no, the verm layer is your barrier against contams...

You take the foil off after inoculation. Leaving the foil on limits GE which is bad

Yeah man your good. I put around 12 jars in a cupboard as an experiment to see how it faired against those in indirect light. As of right now (~ day 8) the cupboard are do just slightly better than those expose to direct light. This is probably because the cupboard maintains a constant 79ºF  and the jars in indirect light have been exposed to colder and more fluctuant temperatures.

Goodluck.

Wait what? I've always left my foil on unless it stalls or stops growing altogether (if it does, this doesn't happen regularly, only a couple of times). I know there's supposed to be a dry vermiculite barrier on top of the actual substrate but isn't this still an invitation to contaminates?
Do you take the tin foil off immediately after you noc up or wait until you see growth? I wouldn't imagine mycelium needs much gas exchange...
Thanks :mushroom2:

Just go ahead and take it off. The foil will do nothing for you save for keeping moisture from sterilizing out of the verm barrier Thus defeating its purpose. As long as you've got a good dry verm barrier (and have sterile procedure and inoculant) you won't contam. I still grow PF cakes with my other grows because I like them and they're practically a guaranteed success every time - several dozen PF jars, and still to this day not a single contaminant. I treat em like they're frigin sealed up also, just like the grain jars, and only have an occasional grain contam

the dry layer is ur barrier  everything needs water to live  if theres no water IE ur dry verm layer they will not live also dry verm is non nutritious  so they starve  and the thickness is a gauge that if not disturbed can and will  not promote life  or else wed see mold bac all over every dry object

not to try an jack this thread or anything just dont want to start a nearly identical thread on Colonization or Gas Exchange,i would have posted in advanced mycology but i feel more will see this here, and any monitors feel free to move this,in the meantime..if myc produces c02 on its own as it colonizes,an grows best in a high c02 environment would introducing it to c02 enrichment from day one after inoculation/germination help speed growth considerably?

i mean what if growth does not necessarily progress by the day but rather by ppm of c02 that is progressively introduced/made by the myc colonizing the substrate?
could it be beneficial to lets say "pump" in c02 into jars through a self healing injection port, essentially "flooding" the jar with it once after inoculation?,how much does oxygen play a part at this stage of growth inside a jar?i would think it still needs to "breath", an it could through whatever was provided for GE,just got to thinking, witch most of the time gets me into shit, but whatever.just wanted some opinions on the matter, before i get into experimenting

criticism needed and more than welcome!

That'd be like pumping a sealed room you're in full of co2 to try making you work harder... Myc breathes out co2 just like you. You'll suffocate it... That's mycelial abuse!!!

Unless I'm wrong here, myc would colonize faster when it's built up co2 (from breathing it out) in the mycrobial "hopes" of finding fresher air... If this improves their growth, I there's not much you can do to take advantage of that other than make it possible for it.

Should be fine I use the cupboard above the refrigerator and that worked just fine. Plus cupboards are not airtight.

The mycelium will colonize faster with less CO2. The gas exchange though must be limited to avoid early pinning and promote colonization.
