Thanks, good to know and have a confirmation. You are right, it isn't "airtight"...

This thread definitely helped me as I was putting my jars in a black plastic trash bag, and then in a box on the top shelf of my closet that stays about 77 degrees. I was told when colonizing keep them in a dark area at room or slightly above room temperature, I was also under the impression you leave the tinfoil over the jars after inoculating to prevent contams. It's been exactly 1 week after i knocked up the jars, and i'm just now realizing I needed to lose the tin foil to help GE.
So not to hijack the thread but I have a quick question and would think it's pointless to dig up an old thread or even start a new thread to ask - Would leaving the jars covered with tin foil for 1 week after inoculation be enough time to potentially make the jars stall or give out on me? The tin foil was left on 7 days and I removed it today, no signs of germinating but I know to wait atleast 2 weeks. Just wondering if a week of no GE is long enough for it to stall out on me.
Thanks.

Kitchens are gross. Leaving the foil on loosely can be beneficial. Some do, some don't. If I had my jars in a kitchen I would definitely have them in a box/ tub of their own. Various reasons, but if you have a contam...you have a good chance of smelling it when you check your box if you have them contained. Keeping the jars clean at all costs has never served me wrong.

It's not just about GE. The other reason you're supposed to remove the foil is so any moisture absorbed by the filter during sterilization can quickly dry.

never thought about that but good point, alot of good a dry verm layer will do if it gets wet and stays that way
