This, that or the other thing as spawn.

The truth be known:

WBS (wild bird seed), P/C (popping corn), CC (cracked corn), Millet, Milo, Rye grain, WB (wheat bran) & Perlite all work well as spawn. So long as you have the moisture content right & the innoc of spores is clean & viable.

My foaf has had leftovers of all sorts of things, then combined then together, soak 18 hours (until you get the spawn material to expand from absorbing moisture -- until it will not expand any more).

Then, RINSE WELL, DRAIN WELL & PC for 60 to 90 minutes, then shake jars (or bags) while hot.........& you are good to go.

Poke, the best way to look at that is to use biological efficiency as a measure of yield. BE is the yield by weight off of a set weight of substrate. To be fair to BRF, you should only use it's weight, not the weight of the verm that is usually mixed in.

With the same strain, same conditions, same cultivator, BE should not varry much. Of course, BE will varry between grains and bulk substrates, casings and cakes etc. so compare apples to apples. BE doesn't varry much from grain to grain, or cake formula to cake formula for example.

The dry weight of a quart of grain is more than the dry weight of the BR in a quart of BRF/Verm, so per unit of volume, given the same BE, yield should be higher off the grains.

I started this thread because some think popping corn is the holy grail of SPAWN, others think rye berries are, others think cracked corn is, others think straight millet is, others think wild bird seed combo is & others think various grain/seed is.

I also mentioned perlite & wheat bran (combined) & I suppose perlite & brown rice flour would work as well. In either case the perlite functions as a carrier for whatever flour/bran nutrient it is combined with. However, that is not the point.

The point is: there is no magic ingredient........it all works as SPAWN. Some of it also works (better than others) as a SUBSTRATE.

My foaf has never used any spawn as a substrate, only because he has tons of premium compost readily available as a substrate & because adding sufficient spawn to large amounts of compost normally gives very high B/E returns. So, using any seed/grain as a substrate makes no sense in his situation

What it all boils down to is economics, availability & ease of use, as in -- whatever spawn or substrate works for whoever has that commodity (or any combination of those items) readily available to use.

Nor is this an ADVANCED issue. I only set it down because there seems to be a hunt for the holy grail of spawn/substrate & IMHO none exists.

Yeah, it's a good thing to drive home. To a certain extent, spawn is spawn. The holy grail of spawn is whatever YOU can make with the most CONSISTENCY, EASE, and least EXPENSE.

BTW, BRF does work in place of the wheat bran suggested by stamets for the perlite spawn.

One thing to consider for those who have limited spawn producing capacity (small pressure cooker, cheap mother fuckers, high contam rates etc) the smaller the kernel, the more bulk substrate can be innoculated per unit of volume of spawn. Example, a quart of millet can innoculate more bulk substrate than a quart of a larger grain like popcorn. Of course this is a of limited concern as it's generally accepted (in this forum at least) that spawn is cheap and easy to make, so just make more to account for the difference.

Very good points!
There is nothing perfect about any type of spawn,
I find myself using them all,
in rotation,
over and over again....
Keeps things fun

rotation is good, especially if you're keeping spores. Don't get the genetics too used to 1 substrate.

Hey! Thats me!

Basically I like popcorn because I can actually strain it in my strainer, its cheap and clean (WBS that I get has sticks in it and other junk), and it works well for me.

I agree with you though, there is no holy grail of spawn, just a personal favorite. Its all about choice, availability (impossible for me to get rye berries in my town), and ease of use. I dont see how one could work better than others except if you were to use it as a substrate as you stated. Although Anno pointed out something to me, popcorn has a drawback as the size of the kernals means less inoculation points when you spawn. If you were to compare millet to corn, you would realize that you can get many more inoculation points with the smaller kernals. This could possibly mean faster bulk colonization due to a more even spawn spread.

Try new things, and use what works best for you. This is what I have done, and I am doing just fine.
