Real Chode like. Not bad!
Also, wonder if we could get a group hunt with ALL members?! Or would that involve too much politics? haha.

Awesome find LOTG! Those porcini mushrooms look a lot like Boletus pinophilus or king boletus. I'm not expert though and I guess If the TI gave you the ID on Edulis that's what they are. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porcini.
I found some that look similar to yours in the forest but believe mine are Boletus pinophilus rather than Edulis. It also smells like agaricus. There were heaps of these growing. The biggest one had a cap about 50cm in diameter and the stem was as thick as my forearm! check out the pine tree growing in the background for a comparison
Pics as follows

although they do like similar i have to say i think your right that they are not B. Edulis. the caps should have been sticky to touch unlike Suillus Luteus (slippery jacks) which are slimy to touch even when dry. BTW "king boletes" are B. edulis and B. pinophilus are known as "pinewood king bolete". my B. edulis pores have gone green and B. pinophilus will be yellow to brown. compare these pics to the ones i posted and also yours... porcini porcini theres still a few Boletus Edulis growing at that patch so i will have more pics later in the week. heres some from today... Puffball
A. Muscaria
Agaricus
plenty of A. Rubescens and A. Muscaria about today

Cheers mate. The caps were not sticky they were dry to the touch. Those I've found also aged to have green pores rather than brown so I guess inconsistent with B.pinophilus. (Poor lighting in my photo is a bad representation). They do look identical to the older specimens in the photo you posted above. Another problem is that all the specimens I've found are old or rotting making it a difficult ID aswell. It's a tasty boletus of some sort is all I can be sure of for now.
By the way how would you describe the flavour of your porcini mushrooms?

well if the pileus was not sticky its possible its not even a B. edulis, you'll have to go back and take a few more notes on the fungus. i wasnt certain that the older specimens i posted above were B. edulis i just assumed they could have been since they were growing within a close proximity to the others. all the ones i picked i checked for the "sticky" touch which they all had including some of the bigger sized ones and it had not been raining. maybe go back and look for some younger specimens havent eaten them to be honest lol in the process of drying to preserve them, going to try the next couple i pick

Going back this morning for a look I gotta try this sticky cap test and hopefully there will also be some younger specimens somwhere. Reckon they had dry caps though but I honestly didn't test for that trait so I could be wrong. I bought some 20grams of dried B.edulis for $20!!! Damn these mushrooms are expensive! They have got some intense flavour. I chewed on a bit of stem from a specimen I found to compare and it tasted sweet with a walnut like flavour comparable to those I bought though very mild I guess being less concentrated.

wild porcini are extremely rare so goodluck EB your not wrong there, $120 kg i suggest taking a cross section photo like the one above, also B. pinophilus would have a dry touch even when young where as B. edulis will be sticky as also described above
Also i should mention that my specimens have gone "sponge like" during the drying process which is consistent with B. edulis

went back to check on the Boletus Edulis patch before only to find someone had beaten me there and tottaly destroyed the place, all fungi (including the porcini) in the area were ripped up and tossed around

That sucks balls LOTG! I never understand why anyone would kick fungi around just for the hell of it. Coulda been some kids tromping through the forest. If they were growing in a reserve it really doesn't surprise me and a lot of my sub patches in forest reserves get trashed too.
The patch of boletus I found turned out not to be B.Edulis BTW. I'm quite confident they are Piniphilus after doing a little more research.

Your photograph is a bit difficult to use for identification.
Check for a rusty-orange, large annulus - and attempt to get a good spore print. It should also be rusty-orange.
Try to snap a few digital camera images in macro mode and repost 'em.

some fungi from the other day, more pics the merrier...
found some wicked Coprinus Micaceus and possible Coprinus plicatilis growing out the front in the lawn the other morning but were gone by the time i got home from work. this habitat does produce some subs, drove past earlier and thought it looked like it belonged here

sometimes i also think this and then i remember that i was also once a kid and used find the most joy out of kicking over toadstalls and mushrooms it looked more like someone had gone there with serious intensions to rip them up as if some "do gooder" saw me picking mushrooms and decided to take matters into their own hands, its a public reserve behind some houses so maybe...? too bad bout the B. pinophilus better luck next time
