cauliflower shroom
    #1583141 - 05/27/03 10:32 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I was pick pocketed in London and lost my digi camera so no pics unfortunately but I found some fungi growing on a log in some woodland that looked just like a cauliflower floret but was gelatinous to the touch.

Any ideas as to what species it could be ?

There is a fungus called the Cauliflower Coral. It's scientific name is Ramaria botrytis. Here's what my book says about it:

Large, dense, whitish head, with many compact, red-to orange-tipped, coral-like branches. Thick stalk. Not recommended for eating.

The only other thing in my book that reminds me of cauliflower is the White Coral Jelly, or Tremella reticulata. Here's what the book says:

White to pale yellow stalks, repeatedly branched and fused; branches hollow, with blunt, rounded tips.

Grows on soil or well-rotted stumps in the Nortern U.S. and southern Canada, east of the Rocky Mountains....

in summer and fall. So I guess that's not it.

The book says the Cauliflower Coral fruits in summer and fall, too, so I don't know what this could be!

My book is not that great, though, and it might make a difference because you are in Great Britain.  ?

Thanks for the info Steve.

I wasn't considering eating it, just interested as to what it was as I've never seen anything like it before. It looked solid but once I touched it lightly with my finger It turned to mush if you know what I mean..

Damn, I miss my digi  :frown:

I've roamed around woodland since I was a kid but have never seen anything like this.. I might buy one of those cheap disposable cameras and take a few pics if I can find more specimens.. I'm intrigued as to what it could be.

An interesting possibility is that you may have found a slime mold. Some of them could appear as you describe, and they certainly are gelatinous to the touch.

Happy mushrooming!

Just in case somebody didn't know what a cauliflower mushroom was, here is one:

This one is approx. 25cm long and about 15cm wide. Growing from an oak log underneath the ground.

They are pretty good too  Tastes like swiss cheese.

It does look very similar to that pick you posted of Brefeldia Maxima ToxicMan.

Can slime mold be cloned on agar much the same as how a mushroom is ?

I can't think of any reason why not. I know other species of slime molds have been cultivated.

Here's an example:
