Re-casing after first flush - good or bad?
    #1582758 - 05/27/03 10:42 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I was reading about casing and thinking that my foaf probably had a weak first flush because he let the casing layer get overcolonized. He said there is some overlay. He is wondering, should he do some scratching and add a fresh casing layer before the second flush? He wouldn't need to put it back in the incubator to do this, right? Or should he just scratch and that's it? Is re-casing risky?

Well no one responded so my foaf took a chance and here's what he did:

All aborted pins were removed from the first flush with a set of clean tweezers. Then some of the matted yellow spots were poked and roughly up just a little. A light sprinkling of fresh casing material was then added to the top, just enough to cover the mycellium but only about 1/4" thick at the most.

Will the jury weigh in on this one? Is this method going to help or hurt the second flush?

your flush should be fine if you cased them correctly and being very sterile the flush shount be bad.

I notice that, due to water respiration, the mycelia / casing always shrinks after harvest number 1. I put moister-than-usual (sterile) casing layer down all over, then fill in the gaps on the outside. I think it provides better contam prevention than having all hat mycelia exposde.
