Becoming a lab assistant with a 2 year Associate's degree is a good place to start. From there move onto a BA in microbiology or biology, eventually attaining your masters. Becoming a mycologist is no quick process.

So majoring in biology would be a good starting point?

I plan on majoring in Botany which Mycology falls under. Maybe I will attempt and work on a PhD if things are going well five years from now.

Yes.  If you want to do mycology as in research on fungi, you need a B.S. in biology and then go on to grad school to do you PhD in some fungus related area.

But if you want to do mushroom farming that is something different that college would not be as good for.

From what I understand, tbe money is in preventing fungus in cash crops like corn, soybeans, coffee, etc...

I took a senior level mycology class in college. Mycology may not be what you think it is. It's about 95% mold, pathogens, and fungi's impact on society. Mushrooms are an area very few mycologists focus on, and there is little money to be had in that field. If you went for mycology, probably the only way you would make money is being a research professor at a university, which means getting your PhD.

Another point that is relevant is that the majority of mycology now focuses on the molecular biology of fungus, it's not "oh this mushroom is this because it has these characteristics," it's sequencing DNA and trying to find out how to kill different molds and pathogenic fungus.

Keep that in mind before considering a career in mycology. It's really not what a lot of people think it is.

Somebody has got to be among the first to study them. I call dibs. Sequencing DNA...so I could genetically engineer Oysters to break down radiation more effectively?
