Hi. Ive been lurking these forums for nearly a year now using all the infomation and such. Decided to register to show you guys the grow i have going on at the moment.
I made up 7 jars about a month ago, 5 were claimed by contam in the process of colonizing D: I now have one nearly finished and one in the FC. Im quite pleased seeing as its my first PF grow (used grow kits in the past to great success )
First cake (square jar)

First pin!

Dunking Pin was destroyed during birthing in a nasty blue mess

Fruiting
Day 1

Day 2

Day 4
Second Jar (round, way over half pint)

Very late update

Finished! Better late than never eh? I will be attempting a bulk soon.

Good effort on your first grow! Just wondering how you sterilised your jars because 2 out of 5 is a pretty poor success rate. Pressure cooking for 60 - 90 minutes at 15psi will ensure a better chance at reducing possible contaminations. What's your FC setup?

Thanks. I used a pot and steamed them for 90 mins. It was 5 out of 7 that were infected D:
I think it was the fact i used quite big jars and they took quite a while to colonize.
Im just using a translucent plastic box (no holes) with perlite at the bottom. The cake is sitting on a xbox game case (it actually looks like its trying to grow onto the case, theres strands of myc moving slowly across the case ) Im doing at least 10 FOE a day and misting about 5 times. Gets plenty of none direct sunlight and light from a lamp at night.

If you want results and you don't own a pressure cooker I'd either invest or buy pre-sterilised jars online from one of shroomery's sponsors. http://everythingmushrooms.com/sterilized-substrates-and-media/

It's likely you won't get enough fresh air exchange with that type of fruiting chamber. I'd suggest making a shotgun terrarium by drilling holes in all 6 sides. Even with regular fanning you won't get enough FAE and if you do it too often you could compromise humidity in the chamber. Holes should be 6mm. This ensures air exchange and retains humidity.
I would prehaps read this article on how to build a Shotgun terrarium.

Yep. Its just a slightly see through plastic box with perlite at the bottom.
Also original post has been updated with the first proper fruits.

Sorry about the bad image quality. I will be keeping this thread updated as the fruiting continues.
You should have taken the foil off after sterilization.
Also if you kept it on during sterilization with the lid snapped on that would cause problems. You are supposed to allow the jar to breathe in the pot, so that pressure doesnt build up. This is most likely the cause for your failure.
Next time, leave the lid unscrewed during steaming, cover with foil and afterwards remove the foil.

With PF tek You can get great results and High success rates with steam serialization. Mceeb, leave the lid just slightly loose on the jars. I'm guessing that those square jars don't have lids and your just using foil to cover them, right?

I didn't do that, thanks for the tip. Yeah the square jar was just covered with foil.
The two big fruits weighed 18g fresh and were very tasty P:
The 2nd jar has finished now. I will birth it and update with pics tomorrow.

Ok, with the square jars the first layer of foil stays on till you birth the cakes. Second layer you'll remove when you inoculate. If you have the dry vermiculite layer on the top of the jar you don't need any sort of tape over the inoculation holes. The dry vermiculite is your barrier. Also your fruiting chamber should have holes in it for FAE.

That's exactly what I did.
I made some holes in the Fc today and birthed the 2nd cake. Ill get to see what difference it makes.

The high contaminate rate was surely due to the foil lids. It can be pretty hard to inoculate through without damaging the foil to much. For future reference after birthing the cake rinse it well and then dunk for the 24 hours. After that period rinse it again, and roll in Vermiculite.
Judging by your fruits, I see signs of stale air. Those signs would be the white fuzziness on the stipes (stems) of the fruits. Try fanning a little more often if possible. They will love it.
