Stems growing without caps

My fat friend Chunk has a couple cakes (ground millet, Verm ) that he recently birthed. The cakes are contam free and are on their first flush. The shrooms growing on them look diseased, though. They grow into a J-like shape and only the biggest ones have caps (which are very undersized and dont look like they will open) The stems look dry and grey colored. Chunk doesnt know if he should eat the shrooms and he is wondering if the cakes should be tossed. He has never seen anything like this before. Little help?

What do you see inside the stem when you cut it ?
Anyway it sounds like Verticillium, you should check our contamination faq.

Hi, Chunk did check out the FAQ, verticillium picture was not showing up.
Anyway, Chunk picked some and he broke one open. It was all gray inside.
Plus the shrooms were pretty hard and dry. Should Chunk toss the cake?
He will not eat anything that he picked off today. Can this spread to other
cakes in the chamber? How did he get this contam. and how can he avoid
getting it again? :confused:

Other possibilities could be La France or Mummy disease. One thing is for sure, tell Chunk he'll have to wash with bleach the whole stuff and i mean jars, terrarium, just about anything in the process of growing.
Tell Chunk i'm very sorry but he will have to throw away cakes and mushrooms. Chunk should also know that he should try growing again with a personal promise of better luck.
