Need opinion about my straw?
    #1582295 - 05/27/03 08:00 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Ok it's not my straw,  it's the hippie's straw.  So he spawned some straw and has had it in his incubator at 86 degress for about a week now.  He's not sure how much longer to wait.  Should he wait untill all the straw is completly over taken by the mylcium  before casing.  I sugested waiting another week,  but the hippie is impatient..      any and all opinions would be great

I say case it. Even in a week not all the straw will be colonized and if you wait longer the possibilites of overlay are higher.

I've had similar issues with straw. I learned from my stalled experiences that cutting the straw into smaller pieces can sometimes avoid stalling.

I've also had success with gently turning (mixing) my spawn. This is also a good time to add water if needed.

From the looks of your pictures, it might not be a bad idea to wait a bit longer. It looks like you've done well so far. Great job!

Tell the hippie to chop his straw next time and to compact it after mixing in his spawn. Those long strands sticking out everywhere could be problematic.

If he doesn't case it ,it should fruit in another week or 10 days. For cubies i never case straw. The yield is greater with the casing, but i like the quick flush.

You could do that.

You could also turn the whole thing and add more nutrients and water as needed to give it time to heal if needed.

By turn, I mean to gently mix. I sometimes do this when things appear to be stalled. When I do turn, I usually add more nutrients and water as needed to ensure proper healing and growth.

If you mix it up, that will set you back some time. If it doesn't contam, that is.

I've nursed quite a few stalled casings back to health in the same manner I've described. Contamination has never been a problem for me, but I do maintain proper cleaning habits.

GGMM, pg 169
Bulk substrates like straw are generally pasturized
(as opposed to sterilized) and upon cooling, innoculated with
grain spawn. Pasturization selectively kills off populations of temerature-sensitive microorganisms. The population left intact presents little
competition to the mushroom mycelium for approximately 2 week,
giving ample opportunity for the mushroom mycelium to colonize.
If not colonized within 2 weeks, the straw naturally contaminates with other fungi, irrespective of the degree of pasturization.
