Colonization question concerning air and c02
    #1582240 - 05/27/03 05:40 PM (21 years, 22 days ago)

I am wondering about the holes that are put into the jar. After you innoc and set the jars down for colonization should you cover these holes to prevent contam? Or do you leave them out so the co2 can be released and what not. I have heard many different thing like turning the jar upside down because co2 is heavier then air and it will come out that way. I have also heard you should crack the lid a bit and keep the holes covered with tape. I have heard that you should leave it upright and tape all holes.

So what should be done. and why exactly.

Thanks

Close them up.Cube's like a high CO2 while they colonise.5,000-10000 ppm according to Stamets. You drop the CO2 when your ready to fruit.

OH i didn't know that, thats useful... go Stamets. KusSh... how long do your jars take to colonize man, that looks like 50% after 3 weeks. Is that normal? I was under the impression that full colonization took about 3 weeks.

the foaf recommends not covering the holes whatsoever-but out of habit uses tinfoil or coffe filter on top.  mycelium grows well with high co2 but completely taping all holes, and therefore sealing the substrate is a bad thing to do.  growth is immensly slower in comparison, and well, looks funny.  they need air to circulate as they'd like.  and you dont need to worry about contams with the holes open to air AT ALL because that's what that verm layer is for!  the foaf has had a few sealed-bad results-and the ones that are open to air=good results. thats all he can say.

ok so bascially your telling me.. do not tape the holes.. just use the tinfoil that is discussed in the pf tek manual? I am looking for the best way to produce the most amount of mushrooms.

No matter what I will try some with tape, some without tape.. some with just the lid on and no tinfoil, and some with tinfoil.

What you think would be the best...

that is exactly what you should do-as they should all eventually colonize, you will now find out what works the best-for you. but the foaf leaves open if there are water droplets, and covered with tin foil if looking dry-helps a bit.

i agree-fresh air is necessary in colonization and you did the right thing-but only if they were stalled. dont bother flipping unless it slows down too much for ya near the bottom, as flippin when not necessary can result in contam air gettin sucked in. so yes, fresh air is good.
