Haha yah I did do my research. Before I did anything, I purchased "the mushroom cultivator" and read it twice haha. And watch RR's tek for my process. I probably did only research for about 2 months before ordering or doing anything. It made everything aoot clearer, also helps if problems arise. I dont need to worry about everything, and I've seen hundreds of proper growth and bacteria. So I can properly identify. Which is nice.

okay, so day 2, exactly 24 hours after inoculation of the jars, I took more pictures. Unfortunately one of my jars has a black spot in it, which I am truly surprised. Due to the uncanny clean measures I took.
Sprayed the air down with Bleach water(1 part bleach, 9 parts water)
Used glove box, Lighter, Iso alcohol, A fresh shower. Turned off the AC for 2 hours before hand.
I may be getting ahead of myself and the spec is nothing but some dark verm pressed up against the glass(or i can only hope, perhaps you gents can shed some light on the ordeal)
thanks,
C

Also, Is it a huge ordeal if they are stored at 68 degree's? I realize its not Ideal.

the spec could be a spore, could be black soot from flaming your needle, or could just be verm i know of the black spec your talking about i get them often myself you will be fine. 68 is a little on the cool side but should not be a big deal they will just be slower to colonize. I have my jars in a closet when i wake in the morning my temp is usually around 68 i just open the closet door all the way and run a space heater in my room pointed away from the closet it usually rises to about 75 and stays that way for the duration of the day.

Just wondering but for all the effort you have put in, very thorough by the way, why are you bothering with BRF when you have everything you need for a grain/bulk grow?

You know I never really thought about doing grain/bulk grow. I just figured I would do cakes first, then after. I would start doing grain/bulk grows.
But thanks for the advice, each new grow, I aspire to try a new strain/species.
I do enjoy it, The mycellium growth is always slower in person hahah
Thanks,
C

Everything is coming along nicely, It is slow moving haha, since they are stored in a room that gets to 68F, I think colonization is just gonna be a bit slow.
I have the 72 hour pictures, and I will get the 4 day mark at exactly the 96 hour mark.
the process itself is tons of fun, a few things though. How long is too long for colonization? I have read tons of literature on correct timing, at what mark is it just too slow? or none existent even.

Your substrate is slightly too wet.
Also that black speck worries me. If it spreads then start worrying.
Use less BRF next time and less water.

Okay, I can do that, I used exactly what was prescribed in RR PF tek, 2 cups verm, 1 cup brf, 1 cup water. One of the jars is over hydrated, due to the fact I felt like there was not enough water in it.
The black spec also worries me. It hasn't spread in 2 days at all. Which is reassuring to some extent, I think I am going to start a monotub in about 2 - 3 days. WBS into 50/50 coir/verm, perhaps some gypsum, if I can find it.
My pressure cooker only fits 1/2 pint jars, if I need to get a bigger one, I guess I can be done, but its not within the realm of impossibility to do substrate inoculation with 1/2 pints, it will just take 5-6 per monotub, correct?

I cant advice you on bulk grows.
Water content can be tricky to control. If youre unsure, use one dl (100 ml) or so less just be on the safe side. I found that too wet substrates colonized poorly so the rule less is more is very much real.
Good luck!

That black spot isn't a contaminate. I noticed it on 3 of my first BRF jars and actually tossed one thinking it was bad. It must either be black soot carbon from the torching of the needle, or a dense collection of spores. Good luck

THANKS!
That makes complete sense, the needle tip i was using was a hollow point, and it was getting verm/etc inside it, and the lighter was charring it.
It is coming along, since the grow conditions are so cold right now. It is coming really slowly.
I have a aquarium heater, submersible, obviously. I am going to use that, to heat a couple of tubs. I need to change the temperature badly. IMO.
Thanks guys,
C
PS. Ill update with more pictures once this mycellium isn't going at a decrepit pace. It will be 3 weeks before it fully colonizes at this rate...haha

The black thingy is charcoal. Some vendors seem to put it in the syringes to make you think you have a thick load of spores in there. That's also why it doesn't grow.

Good job on doing your research before jumping in. Wish I had seen RR s videos before I started my project.
