Create a sporeless strain by isolating one spore?

I was thinking. What would happen if you germinated and isolated a single spore of say P.ostreatus? I would think it would grow into a culture that could colonize and create mushrooms, but lack the sexual genotype to create spores. Is that how a sporeless strain would be created? Just not allow a sexual encounter, therefore removing the necessary genome to reproduce? The only way to multiply a strain like this would be a tissue sample(no spores), therefore genetic fading would eventually prevent it from growing. I can't find any information regarding this idea. I've heard that when doing a multi-spore inoculation to agar, to let the spores mate with other compatible colonies before sectoring. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

the mushroom is the sexual reproductive organ of a fungus. Ascomycetes and basidiomycetes will not make fruiting bodies (what we eat) without first forming dikaryotic hyphae; in order to get a dikaryotic hyphae, you gotta have two spores and they must be sexually compatable. One spore gives you endless mycelium searching for a mate and never making a mushroom. As to their sexual orientation, they are not boy and girl like animals but mating strains; some species as simple as Plus and Minus; others like shitake are more complicated in terms of which spores are compatible with others. Hope this explains it

That occurred to me that it wouldn't produce hyphae. I thought there was a chance that it would be able to fruit, just not create basidia or spores on the gill plane. Any idea on how Paul Stamets was able to create a sporeless fruitbody?

You don't 'create' a sporeless strain except by accident. Usually, one just pops up now and then, and if it has the other characteristics you want, you clone and save it. It's fairly common around here for people to 'complain' of sporeless cubes, when instead they should clone it and be thankful. RR

Ok, good to know. He publishes his 'sporeless' mushrooms then doesn't explain. Just curios. Thanks
