Some days are better than others

For those who look long enough, good things often found at bargain prices. My foaf kept his eyes open for a long ......long time........looking for a pro grade incubator & finally snagged a fridge size working Percival Incubator (36F to 104F) for $25 at a surplus place.
Then walks into another second hand place & spots a AA 925X (sterilizer) & picks it up for $50. The pressure gauge is broken, but a replacement is only $15.
Sometimes life is just sweet 6T

Haha... I know the feeling. Your moseying along in this new mom-and pop shop when it's like the widget says, "pssst... over here". Right there it is. Halfass hiding behind some piece of garbage on the shelf. You pull it out expecting the usual price but no... your palms begin to sweat. You reread the price tag expecting to see a faded 3rd digit. You clutch the item firmly and abandon any further shopping to complete the sale. You hold your breath during the ringup hoping the proprieter doesn't realize he mad a mistake in pricing. You finally get it home but before putting it to good use you snap a few pics to share with your online buddies who you know are gonna be green with envy.

Yah, same question here- what the hell you need a vacuum system for 6T?
I'm sure there's something sexual behind it...

What for??
At a few west coast barter fairs & festivals my foaf has seen shrooms that were only reduced in size to about 95% of their fresh wet size, held their shape perfectly & were cracker dry. (EDIT----the way I stated that sounds wrong. I meant the shrooms only lost about 5% of their original size) That was done by vacuum.........somehow. He acquired a vacuum pump & chamber....... to give that a whirl. What he discovered was that it takes a special machine that, will purge the vacuum. Because, in a regular vacuum chamber..........when you put in under a strong vacuum...... it does remove the moisture. Except the chamber holds that moisture inside it. When you release the vacuum, the shrooms rehydrate to a large degree with the moisture in the chamber. So, you have to do it again & again to dry the suckers. So, I figure one needs a machine that will build - hold a strong vacuum.......... then after a period of time...then.....you can increase the vacuum more..........which purges the moisture outside the chamber. Anyway, that is the idea & my foaf is tinkering with it. 6T

So you get very fragile, hollow shrooms that don't shrink like desiccant likes to do?
They are not hollow or more fragile than any cracker dry shroom. They just retain their natural look & shape, but are cracker dry. 6T

I too have noticed that some high quality shrooms I get from a buddy have there full shape and size. They dont even bend or twist when drying. I wish I could do this to my shrooms. Is it vacume or freeze drying??

For what its worth, I'm pretty sure thats Freeze Drying. As far as the double-vacuum idea, wouldn't putting Drierite in the vacuum chamber along with the mushrooms remove the moisture left in the chamber just as well as the re-vacuuming? I've got a vacuum/desiccant chamber and an air pump and my dried ones look just like everyone else's. Maybe I don't understand something about "strong vacuums".
Oh, on freeze drying Quote:
The basic idea of freeze-drying is to "lock in" the composition and structure of the material by drying it without applying the heat necessary for the evaporation process. Instead, the freeze-drying process converts solid water -- ice -- directly into water vapor, skipping the liquid phase entirely. In the next section, we'll find out how freeze-drying machines pull this off.

Freeze drying: Items are frozen, fast (I wonder how you want to accomplish this with mushrooms at home, except perhaps dumping them in liquid nitrogene...)
Vacuum is applied. Heat is applied. Due to vacuum the ice evaporates to vapor directly at a low temperature. The water vapor condenses in a condenser that is mounted in front of the vacuum pump.
IMO not something that is feasible doing at home.
