    #1581535 - 05/27/03 03:10 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

my cakes are colonizing pretty good. the mycelium covers more than 3/4 of the jars surface. the problem is that the coverage is nothing like what ive seen in pictures. its white and all but its not thick, i can see pieces of clumped BRF in it but its not thickly growing. its like its just covering and thats al. is this normal? or is it supposed to get thick alrady. i know its getting nutrients because the cake is depleating a bit, just the damn mycelium isnt getting thickly coated. someone help!!!!

I'm using fine grade verm, and that is how my cake looks also.

EDIT: I also meant to say that it looked like this after 6 days of innoculation. Sorry.

It probably should be relatively thick by then... are you incubating them? because if your not it might not be fully developed yet. Is it really milky white/spreading from innoculation points? If its not it could be cobweb, btu i have the feeling that you just need to give it some time. Is it growing into the cake? can you see it on the bottom of the jar?

Wettness is constantly a problem with the PF TEK. It is really easy to get a matted down cake that the mycelium can't penetrate. My bet is that you packed the substrate into the containers too much, or that the substrate is too wet. Keep us all posted as to how they are doing =).

you cant do anything with uncolonized substrate-there's a chance it'll colonize but you should take all forms of covers/seals from the top of the jar, because if its open to fresh air it iwll take some wetness out, but i fyou see clumps it is probly too wet and too packed together. next time you make jars, never load your jars until the substrate is light and fluffy. and you can use a half colonized jar for casing/spawning or fruiting if you just scrape it down to the white stuff. good luck
