welcome to the mono club... but i gotta ask why did you use 100% brown rice? any specific reason?

For me, it is the easiest grain to prepare, and the hardest grain to screw up.. and I have gotten the fastest colonization times using whole brown rice, between brf/verm and wbs. but thats just IME

Huh you caught my attention with that.  Plus points for thinking outside the box.  I like it.  What do you do to hydrate the rice before inoculating?

Wow....

First off to OP, your doing fine, however next time don't worry about the layer on top, it will take more time to colonize and can increase contam chances... If you want to do a casing, I'd suggest getting a 50/50 peat/verm casing ready after your tub is at 100%

Casing is not needed with cubes FYI

I leave all my holes taped, and just put the lid on and the natural gaps between lid and tub will be enough for GAS EXCHANGE (GE).

To fix the info in this thread, you do NOT NEED or WANT "FAE" or fresh air exchange during colonization. That can cause issues with fruiting. You want to remove tape, and stuff polyfil lightly when introducing to fruiting conditions.

Any more questions feel free to ask, and have fun!! looks like you know pretty well what you are doing :bigjoint:

Just prepare it as if you were going to have dinner but add nothing to it (salt butter, etc lol)
it usually takes 30-45 minutes for brown rice to cook.. just follow the directions on the back of the bag.

Here is a picture at day 10:

I think I will scoop what you see uncolonized out because its been like that for the past 2 days now, ive seen not much growht. 2 days ago I though it would be time to fruit, but not much has changed since. It has a good mushroom smell so I'm not too worried about contams.
Also, the stuff that is on top is "fluffly" and not stuck to the myc, thats why I dont see a problem with scooping it out

Yes, you were right, skittles. So you just pressure cook after cooking the rice? Is that the end of the process? lol. Why are more people not doing this? Have you tried it in larger jars? Just curiousity over here. haha

That's a sweet tek man. Kudos on that. btw, I don't think you saw my edit on the last post, but I personally would give that tub a little more time. That's just me though. Do your thing and good luck!

Well after 2 days, it looks the same so I did what I mentioned above. I scooped out the uncolonized substrate (it was a tiny bit) and fanned it once, polyfilled the holes and put a light on it.

Before I scooped it out (i cleaned spoon with alcohol)

With the light on

substrate depth (2.5inches)

Myc loves some ductape!

Also, for my next monotub (in a few days, grains almost ready) I will make sure to level the substrate/spawn mix better, this one is pretty uneven

I wonder why that one spot never got colonized... Did you cover everything with a layer of substrate after mixing? Or did you leave a couple exposed grains?

First off, nice grow man!

Suggestions: You should try out wild bird seed instead of whole brown rice.  It will work just as well and cost a whole lot less.
