I think financing a couch is a pretty retarded idea. But then again, I think financing anything that doesn't go up in value (ie, not a house) a terrible idea.

Never forget this. You'll have a lot of pressure from salesmen, ads and friends to do otherwise.
Don't let them win

As for the couch, I have no idea what price it should be.
The first thing I would do before negotiating is sit on it and see if its comfortable.
If it's not comfortable it's worthless to me

it's a small item, paying it off goes a long way toward establishing a solid credit rating which in turn looks great when he applies for that home loan, things such as guaranteed approval and much lower interest rates, it would more than pay for the couch in savings on interest with only a .5% reduction in interest on a home loan
what's foolish is rent to own bullshit

In order to build your credit all you need to do is get a credit card and buy a 5$ thing every month and pay it off on time.
Then again, if there is no interest on the payment, I might consider financing it just so it becomes a stable monthly payment.

On the topic of the original couch, I couldn't see offering more than $100 (by email). If someone is willing to pay more than that then let them have it. People throw out couches all the time, you're lucky if you can get any money at all for used upholstery unless it's something really nice.
