HipHop and social r/evolution
    #1579564 - 05/26/03 08:34 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

as we wander through our banal consumer existance, people always wonder

when will there be a new age of enlightenment, ushered in by revolutionary poets, artists and philosophers?

well my friends, look no further than your local record store, or the nearest alley and you will see that the new renaissance has all ready materialized.

it has a name: hiphop.

I throw on a track by Mr. Lif, and instead of hearing the emotionally-laden, pretentious lyrics of your average rock song, I hear philosophical musings and social commentary:

The master dreams of a society twisted
One cult with everyone enlisted
Clingin to religion just to feel uplifted
Brother I can feel your aggression
Life on a whole is in question
We ignore what we don't mention
To err is human, but the road we're assumin
Stops all things from breathing and the flowers from bloomin
Now I'm no historian, but I recall
That ALL
Civilizations fall
We give up our control but we suffer from withdrawal
We learn how to walk now we're too proud to crawl
[You thinking large?]
(We need to think small)
[Man first the universe]
(That's the ultimate brawl)

then I'm like......shit, this muthafucka is fresh!, my mind is so blown by this poets super-energized "conscious" lyrics, that I have to go outside to get some fresh air, then what do I see? a man spinning on his head, listening to the same song........oh....shit....

what has happened to reality, I run down the street, I try to ground myself...oh, I'll just look at all the dilapidated housing that IS my reality!

oh fuck!

some dude is listening to the same song, and has transformed the once ugly, barren concrete wasteland into a beautiful, complex, mind-blowing peice of art.....ahh shit!

what has happened to my dysotopian ghetto?, these crazy kids have turned it into an uber-creative utopian playland!

hiphop. hiphop is what happens when an individualistic, capitalist, super-competitive society contains individuals with nothing do to but live in the moment and try to be as free as can be.

hiphop adherants, like the graffiti artist, have flipped the capitalist attitude of competitive living on its head.

hiphop is our most powerful modern social revolution. Sure its been co-opted by corporations and tainted for the mainstream, but once something like hiphop (as demonstrated by graffiti) starts, it can never stop until it becomes the dominant paradigm.

hiphop is the ongoing battle for control of our mental environments. The more corporations try to flood our sight with advertisements for useless products, the more graffiti artists will flood the streets with bright colours that hold subversive and positive messages.

in the words of the RZA

Positive
Energy
Activates
Constant
Elevation

buy what, the Mr. Lif cd? go to your local independant record store.

anyways. I think if anyone reading this post has any revolutionary spirit and/or artistic ability, they should go out and buy a big black marker and start scribbling their thoughts all over the city.

DO IT!!!!!!

I edited it.

Old-skool Hip-Hop is the shiznit! Really, no joke. It was good stuff with good messages for the most part. Then (c)rap came around and twisted Hip-Hip into the most shitty music there is. No creativity whatsoever in rap.

I really hate how tv says- this is hip hop, and shows gangsta rap. They should continue to be very seperated forms of music. Now people will confuze Hip-hop with rap (which I thought you were talkin about). Now I assume everyone confuzes hip-hop with rap.

murex:

what do you consider "gangsta rap" though? lots of people think "the wu-tang clan" is gangsta, but, for the most part (allthough a few members drop shitty albums" the wu-tang clan are just discussing social issues in a really intelligent manner.

but yeah, the insurgence of "rap" into the public consciousness taints peoples perceptions of HipHop. its like people confusing skinhead hardcore with punk rock.

All theze angry people making music should just fucking let it go! It isn't worth devoting all that time to. It just shows how thin-skinned theze people are. They need to grow up and learn to deal with life.

Give me Classic Rock anyday. grunge, modern rock, alternative... they're just poor excuses for REAL ROCK.

that's because there aren't many good lyricists out there right now...
it's easier to "program" repetitive beats on a computer, anyone can make electronic music... althought I admit, I like some of it. for pure melody, I prefer jazz.

but for pure music, nothing compares to Classic Rock.
I'm listening to some right now.

great post

i dont believe one genre 'holds the torch', any artist can do 'it' to you.

i tend to focus more on the dynamics rather than an outright message..
It's like my brain needs to be befriended by the music. You have to earn my brain's trust with your dynamics, then it will follow you.

Don't tell me what you think, show me what you can do.

don't kid yourself... there are thousands of GREAT lyricists out there,
they just want no part of the bastardized, corperatized national scene, that's why you haven't heard of them... no exposure except for regional - if at all.
that's where the internet comes in, there's tons of independent stuff out there, you just have to put a little effort into finding it.

i think hip-hop is the latest incarnation of rituals we've been doing for fun "since time began" and that is coming together in celebration of life and playing percussive music with singing/vocal art.
i wonder how old the art of rap really is?

oh and mr. lif is the shit!!

Graff is the best artform out there, the western art world doesn't consider letters as art, however in asia and africa etc its a well respected artform. Or something like that.

Take a look at it when your stoned, it looks awsome, dont know about shrooms though, i would imagine it would good as well, especially with complex fills (design inside the letters, for all who dont know).

"Graff is the best artform out there,"

yes it is, because it is completely free and pure. Most graff artists are living in poverty, and arent doing it to get rich (of course, a few choice peices definitly help with your portfolio). Graff artists are just living in the moment, putting all of their existence into that one painting, and not expecting anything in return for it.....well....maybe some pussy.

but, I dont think graff is restricted to just
lettering. It used to be, but nowadays nothing matters anymore, there arent any rules, i see tons of wicked graff that have no lettering

Awesome post, atomik!

Yes indeed, if there's any type of social revolution going on right now hiphop is a major part of it. There's two ends of the spectrum though. On one hand you have commercial rap, which is all about money and image. And on the other hand you've got underground hiphop, keeping the ideals and roots of the (counter?)culture alive and kickin. Rock was lost long ago as any type of leading beacon of social evolution. Just as hiphop will eventually lose its way, it's inevitable.

As much as I love hiphop, I'm an even bigger electronic music fan. I think the culture surrounding EM is also for the most part very positive. Since it mostly has no lyrics it's kind of a "faceless" or egoless genre too. Most artists are in it for the music rather than image, moreso than other popular genres of music. And don't say it takes no talent to make, cause I too have been trying for years to make something sound remotely good but have yet to come out with anything decent.

Anyway, I would give this thread 5 shrooms if only I knew how...

max headroom- yeah, I fear that hiphop will lose its way sometimes, but then again...i dont think it can

hiphop isnt like rock, its not just music or an attitude, its a culture, a way of life. And this "way of life" has no guidlines....except for maybe, freedom, expression and individuality manifested through art, music and dance.

musically, hiphop is plastic. for an example, check out dj shadow's new album "the private press", which is hiphop.....i guess, but it doesnt sound like any other hiphop.

First of all, I have to say that there are misinterpretations of the two main discussed "types" of music in this thread.

Many people who are into hip hop, just like many people who are into rock, seem to develop a sense of competition between the two, or a notion that one is revolutionary and the other is useless.

Another thing, to call these music genres "hip hop" and "rock" is far too vague. It's not so black and white. There are artists who produce music which is far too diverse to be so simply classified as either rock or hip hop.

I am not a fan of this gangsta rap garbage, where these self-indulgent, ego and power-driven morons shove "bling bling" in your face and rap about how great they are and how much ass they're kicking and all the fun little things they can do with all their money and toys. I am not interested in this materialistic shit.

There are some hip hop artists however who carry very important messages, and they are often overlooked by fans of mainstream rock. But it works both ways... there are some fans of hip hop or rap, whether it be the good stuff or the bad stuff, who fail to recognize brilliant artists who lean closer to the "rock" or "alternative" genres.

The culture of good quality hip hop (like that of the artist you posted lyrics from), is no more revolutionary than the underground culture of good metal/rock/alternative music. And yes, there IS a culture of people who can separate the bad rock from the good.

To those of you who slander people like Kurt Cobain... it upsets me. Let me first say that suicide should never be an option, and it's unfortunate that Cobain didn't have the strength to cope with his problems. Of this aspect of Cobain, I myself am disappointed greatly, yet, I cannot ignore that as a poet, a musician and philosopher, he was absolutely brilliant in a way that is overlooked by so many people. Cobain had his share of things figured out... he was an evolved being, despite making some poor choices, but for these poor choices he is not to be condemned. He was only human, and the greatest geniuses can also be the greatest fuckups. Take a closer look at what he has to say, and read between the lines.

Believe me, I hate these modern-rock pansies who whine on with their fake emotional angst and bitterness. There are plenty of them out there today. They are not to be mistaken with artists who TRULY felt angst and frustration with society. Artists like Cobain expressed pure, real feelings of injustice and frustration with the ignorant masses and the confining rules of the system. Different people relate differently to these feelings, and in the kind of suburban wasteland that Cobain grew up in, many people such as myself are able to identify.

Not all white suburban families are filled with luxury and priviledge.

A quick note on hip hop, I'd like to hear about more artists who are into changing society and bettering the self, rather than giving in to a superficial lifestyle. If anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them.

EVERYONE has the strength to cope with their problems. Saying someone doesn't is silly. If he was an evolved person, he would definately have the ability to cope with his problems, wouldn't ya think?

You absolutely have to listen to Outkast if you aren't already. Aquemini is IMO one of the best albums of the last fifty years, period, regardless of genre. Belongs up there with anything by Floyd or the Beatles.

only because you see it as "giving up"
as if there were something to give up
judging whether life is worth living is a personal matter
how nice of you to pass judgement

There are three revolutions going on in the world:

hip-hop, napster-style stuff, and linux.

So, if you run a linux box, then use it to illegally download hip-hop and you're basically set.

I'm suprised I haven't seen anyone write anything about Talib Kwali in here. He also has a split CD with Mos Def called Blackstarr. Sick work. Kool Keith, and his work with Dan the Automator, aka - Dr. Octagon. Dead Prez too, even though they're kind of anti-caucasian.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.
