    #1578606 - 05/26/03 02:04 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

my friend has these birdseed jars that have been chillin' for about a week and are just starting to colonize... temp has been good and grow area is pretty sterile, the myclecium has started at the bottom of the jars and is very white and healthy looking except for some light brown swirls that look similar to a coffee stain.... its not very noticable and im prolly overreacting ( i hope )... any1 ever seen contam that looks like this?

My friend has seen a light brown discoloration to small areas of the mycelium. He associates it with dry conditions/substrate.

He says not to worry about it so long as the mycelium shows steady growth. If growth stalls you might try rehydration.

Opening jars to check for contams is a bad idea. You'll only expose the uncolonized substrate to further contamination. You should be able to see and/or smell any contams with out opening the containers anyway.

Distilled water, tap water, whatever. Just make sure that you STERILIZE it before using it. Add a small amount, wait for signs of recovery and if necessary add a bit more.
