Ceap, easy, effective.  I'll be testing this tek on my next monotub grow.  Thanks for the info.

One of the great uses for this method is to create a lot of spawn for bulk, without the need for agar or G2G. This is a good thing, giving new growers an opportunity to try bulk without the need for a PC.

Great Sweert!

Nice write up.

Inoculate and cover the syringe hole with multi pore tape, same thing a little more expensive.

ok, when i did this tek, i thought its pretty dry and it compacted though i didnt really stuffed it that much..

must be the type of wbr used or that i washed it too much(washed all the starchy feel) or that i drained it far too long for that specific wbr.

so next time im doing this, ill add a little coco peat for water retention and anti-compacting, no verm where i live.

so, all cool,

hey, i'll even do this on red rice, its cheaper by about half the price of wbr in here.

thanks anyway. ppreciated, ive two jars still colonizing.

I had a similar experience, and believe this is from not properly cooking the rice/leaving it in a PC for too long.

The next time I try this I will be tweaking the number a little bit for the pressure cooking, for I have seen WBR teks where the rice was PCed for about half of the time (roughly, maybe a bit more) and it was still usable.

Either way, this tek was awesome. Cheap and super easy. Good yields and little hassle. This is my preferred method now :]

Hey, does the lack of follow-up imply folks did not have success? Relative noob here with lots of brown rice to hand...

I should add that here in the uk you can get two quite different kinds of brown rice. One has fatter grains which tend to fluff up and clump together after cooking, the other has longer grains which swell up less and remain separate. I don't know if others have noticed this and had any luck with the second kind.

By the way, I'm mainly interested in this substrate for sclerotia. Have read Stonesun's excellent thread and a few others - I know I should post there too.

I tried it and didn't have great results.  The whole brown rice is very starch and difficult to colonize, so you'll want to cook it and rinse the starch off before loading the jars.  My WBR jar only produced a few fruits, and took a few MONTHS to colonize before pinning at 75% colonization.

K, thanks for the advice. Will give the long grain stuff a bash, alongside some other grains for comparison.

Would make a good spawn medium for noobs without a pressure cooker, all you need to do for rice is kill mold spores and your typical household bacteria, no endospores in brown rice like those found in whole grains.

This would be excellent if a new guy took the time to isolate out a fast preforming mono-culture with good fruiting abilities of course.

The down fall to using rice is the moisture content, where you'll get multiple flushes from whole grains to bulk you'll probably only receive 1 or 2 flushes using rice.

Btw, for whatever reason, mushrooms get much bigger from whole grains op. Good idea none the less

Sorry for the bump. I also wondered the same thing-- if people can get away with not using a pressure cooker with rice flour, one would imagine the same might hold true for whole rice (there is a surface area difference though, more with BRF).  If true, whole rice would be a more nutritious spawn by weight than BRF/verm cakes for people without PCs.

If you don't have a PC can you steam sterilize for 90 mins, and add a dry verm layer?

i used a micro wave bag of brown rice one time when I was really bored. Just zapp'd for the 90 sec it specifies for cooking(covering the vent hole with micro pore worked), then waited to cool and jabbed a needle through the side. Covered that hole with micro pore too.

Took 2 months to colonize, fruited an 8th dry, and had ZERO potency. Used tested lc that produced nice, potent fruits on rye. Was still funny as hell to have a bag of uncle bens colonize though

Hit up my guide on the Getting Started board bro (also linked in my signature).  If you don't have a verm layer in the jar already, you'll just add non sterile verm to the jar and contaminate it.  Also keep in mind that if you have holes in the lid, and nothing to block contaminates...There'd basically be no point in sterilizing it.

Thanks! I just asked because I didn't see it in the pictures. I think I'll try this. Inoculated 6 cups yesteray using PF Tek but I still got some spores left...

Hi, thanks for the information.
I'm just starting and don't own a pressure cooker.
Can i get away with boiling the jars with WBR? If so, for how long?
Thanks again.

I am sorry to say, that this will not work. I would recommend steam sterilizing some PF style jars-- this is the safest method for those with out pressure cookers. Boiling jars with WBR would just turn the rice to goo and make it un usable.

Turn the WBR into brown rice flower, mix it with some verm, and do a PF tek.'

Or buy a pressure cooker, and start with some bulk :]

Thanks man, i appreciate your reply.
Actually what i meant was not boiling but steam sterilizing PF style.
I'm actually buying a PC soon!
Cheers.

Hrm, steam sterilizing might work -- give it a shot on a single jar, if it works you might just have some projects going before your PC comes :]
