I'm an integrated rating (able seaman/engine room rating) so I am general ship duties. Maintenance, cargo ops etc. Looks like I'll be picking up a permanent job on this ship going south during the summer seasons and free agent to do whatever during the winter.

As far as I know you can apply for actual jobs in antarctica (on the bases) through various websites assumingly run through government or scientific agencies, there are heaps of bases (more than you'd think) and heaps of work for laborours (carpentry, painting, electricians etc) from what I know I think people who stay down there do "seasons" which is six months solid and you get paid out at the end. but fuck staying down there for too long you'd go batshit crazy.

Awesome pics!

For other here I just found this after searching the name of the ship.

Quote:

Aurora Australis
Close-up of ship's name: Aurora Australis

Close-up of ship's name: Aurora AustralisSea ice surrounds Aurora Australis off the coast of Antarctica

The Aurora Australis is Australia's Antarctic flagship. It was named after the southern hemisphere atmospheric phenomenon – Aurora Australis.

Designed as a multi-purpose research and resupply ship, the Aurora was built by Carrington Slipways in Newcastle for P&O Polar and launched in September 1989. The ship is 94.9 metres long and 3911 tonnes in weight. It has a cruising speed of 13 knots, and accommodates 116 passengers. It is capable of breaking ice up to 1.23 metres thick.

The Aurora Australis is well equipped with a trawl deck, purpose designed for marine science and oceanographic work.

The ship is also fitted with a helipad and hangar facilities for three helicopters.

The Aurora regularly sails across the Southern Ocean where storms can generate 10 metre high seas and winds of 120–150 km/h.

The ship has been known to roll up to 45 degrees in big swells. In these situations the angle of the deck is far steeper than any streets in Australia.

A wide range of science is conducted in onboard laboratories. This includes biological, oceanography and meteorological experiments and observations.

On a six week voyage, the ship's kitchen can go through 4500 eggs, 1000 kg of potatoes and 280 litres of ice cream.

The ship can produce up to 45,000 litres of fresh water per day for use on board for both drinking and other uses.

With satellite communications, people on the ship can phone anywhere in the world at any time. Expeditioners are also able to stay in contact with friends and family via email.

The Aurora Australis is painted a very bright orange, thus allowing it to be easily seen in ice-strewn waters.

The living conditions on board are excellent. Expeditioners are accommodated in small cabins that sleep three or four people on bunk beds. The beds fold away into couches to save space, and each cabin has its own bathroom and toilet. The ship also has a gym, library and recreation areas. Everybody eats together in a large communal mess.

the sat phone was bullshit, hardly worked at all with a choice of 4 satellites to use.

Email access was the only communications we had most of the trip.

Other than that she's a very cosy ship considering her age. Food is excellent. Gym is sub-par but next trip one of the cooks and I are going halves in some barbells.

Weather was ok most of the way, had a few really rough nights with force 9 winds and the ship got a peak of 48 degree list. Was fucking bananas. I was in the galley and everyone went fucking flying. The overalls hanging on the coathooks in my cabin were sideways. Shit went fucking everywhere. one of the navy boys on board hurt himself pretty bad as he was up on the bridge and went flying into a cupboard. Got some footage so I will put it all together and post it later.

This trip we just did was the Douglas Mawson 100th anniversary expedition. Pretty big milestone for Australia. Look it up if interested.

You got my hopes all up there for a second.:crazy2:

Quote:

Employers are very careful about who they employ to work in Antarctica. It costs a lot of money to train and get people to Antarctica. Poor performance not only effects that employee, but can also lead to reduced productivity in the entire community. Significant experience in a profession is an almost must. While there are jobs for helpers and apprentices, because of the limited number of people that can be sent to Antarctica, and the associated cost, most people are employed because they have rock solid and broad experience in their profession.

Oh well.

Thanks for sharing though that's really cool.

don't blame me, it was the scientists.

All good at science but lacking in manual dexterity.

shadowplay: hey for all I know they all love it, but you'd have to be dedicated. Pretty isolated but all the bases have like bars and social scenes and whatnot. Just take lots of porn.

OP how long did it take you to post this thread?

Also, just one thing that bothers me in all this.

How is it that in one trip to antartica you managed to take pics of daylight and nightime at the same time.

Its either dark for 6 months or daylight for 6 months.

thats awesome dude !

the penguins were great. i'd love to be able to get up close with the penguins and interact with them and shit. we saw the penguins once at phillip island, except they were really timid and shy of people. those antarctic penguins look like they are really friendly and inquisitive. awesome !

and the northern lights aurora type thing looked sick as well!! i'm asuming the crew on the boat would have had warning that that was going to happen.

(they're 'aurora australis' as they are southern, borealis is north  )

Patial: we saw the auroras about a week after leaving the ice when we got further north and it was getting dark around 11pm. The officers on watch called out over the radio that it was starting up. Since we have scientists on board they forecasted it and said we could expect them that night. There was a particularly high amount of solar activity those few days hence why they were really bright.

Apparently next trip (march) we will get a few nights of darkness and a good chance of seeing auroras so I hope to get some photos myself , I didn't want to get blurry photos with the ship moving about

I didn't take the photos of the aurora or the photos of the jade ice berg but all the rest are mine.

fucking spectacular, hey?

I've seen them once before when I was a teenager at my mums place in Tassie. Nowhere near as bright or active, though.

Fuck that is awesome!  Are you working?  I have a friend who wintered over at the south pole.  He said it was like 80 below zero and they had a ceremony where they went outside and ran around the building once in underwear and sneakers.  But he might be full of it.

Your King Neptune Ceremony is at 60 degrees south latitude?  In the US Navy, it is at the equator.  They make you crawl through bins of garbage and stuff, and eat sick rotten food, etc.  If we go across the artic circle, they have a 'Blue Nose Ceremony'  I'm currently trying to see if I can pass the exam for ships engineer.  I'd like to get back on the ocean.  I need some time to study for it though.  I'm a qualiied able-bodied seaman and engineer, but I don't know much about naval engineering.

yeah we do it at the equator too but I think they just brought it down for the 60 degree too. Most ships won't go past that line unless they're going that far down.

I guess there's the 3 extremes in the nautical world. North, middle earth and south. I haven't crossed the equator on a ship yet but when I do I'm sure it will be just as fun.

Anyway so I came home to some nice, grimey filth drum n bass sets... they are a sound for sore ears! Definitely soothing of the sole after going through all my other sets about a million times. These two are really nice low down dark and dirty deep filth.

Ha no but they came awfully close. If you can see the above pics one of the guys I worked with was lying down and all these penguins came up around him sniffing him and seeing wtf he was. Then when he got up and walked off one of them followed him for ages like a puppy it was pretty funny. They look so comical the way they waddle around. Definitely lots of character.

When the ship was breaking through the ice towards our destination there was a bunch of them leaping out of the water onto the ice, the ship knocked a chunk of ice out of the way and this penguin that was mid flight out of the water about to land got knocked back into the water. Was pretty funny

(no penguins were harmed in the making of that post)

after a few days they just became part of day to day life. Waking up with my porthole open you could hear them squawking around outside like chickens in the morning. Such an alien world.I can really say how people say it's suspended in time, because you can look back over how ever many hundreds of thousands of years and not much has changed there except for quantity of ice around. It's a really interesting spot. It's easy to get lost in thought down there just thinking about how fucking trippy the place is and thinking about where you are on the planet at that point in time.

I can't wait to go back. I can really see myself enjoying this job.

The two 76's (the ones on the outside) are on wheels. They take the rotor blades off them and we just push them in by hand. The squirrel is on skids, it gets de-bladed and then a couple of wheels get bolted onto the skids and we put that in first then put the two 76's on either side of it afterwards.

To load them takes about 4 hours, landing them, deblading and stowing them. to offload them one after the other takes about 3 hours.

Down at the ice we were running only the 76's for the expeditioners and their luggage and also sling-loading cargo. The squirrel is more of a recannaissance chopper used to fly ahead and assess the ice conditions for the ship.

thats fair cool man. it's actually really interesting to hear like how the ship works and all that. like having the 76 to fly out and scout the conditions and stuff. the other thing that was fairly amazing too was the size of the anchor, it looked like it weighed atleast a tonne on its own !
