Psilocybe Subaeruginosa
    #1577805 - 05/26/03 03:46 AM (20 years, 10 months ago)

1500x magnification using a color 15x ccd camera with a 100x/1.25 achromatic objective on a bright field microscope. Notice what appears to be a dimple in the center of the spores. The sample was from a dry print and the walls of the spores have collapsed, this causes no damage to the spores and they will 'fluff' when rehydrated in a solution.

Spores: 13-15 by 6.6-7.7 microns (length X width)
Sporeprint: Purplish-brown
Distribution:Australia and New Zealand
Comment:This species is macroscopically close to Psilocybe azurescens but without the definite umbo of P. azurescens. Also very close macroscopically to P. aucklandii, P. australiana and P. eucalypta

Sorry the pic is fuzzy...the camera is new and I havent calibrated it yet...and normaly the 100x objective is used as an oil immersion lens, this was a dry sample and was generously provided by ferret.
I am awaiting my stage micrometers and a new reticle so I can provide a better picture and give a much better indication of the relative size.

The picture is quite good, it would be even better if you used immersion oil.
What kind of microscope & CCD camera do you have?

The microscope is a CXL Plus...Made by Wesco...good little binocular microscope considering the the price I paid for it new....less than half retail...which was about $590...I expected it to be a little less quality but pleasantly suprised at how sharp the image was...I'm trying to obtain a couple of nikon objectives 60x and 100x for the image quality they provide....

the CCD Camera was a Camflex FW-DCAM 640/640 on fire wire into my laptop....wasnt very happy with the camera...may get something a little better soon or use my N90 or the DCS 420 digital if I can find an f mount adapter for a reasonable price....the DCS is built on an N90 Nikon... microscopy imaging is a pricey hobby to get into...thank god most of my other hobbies required some of this stuff.

That is a very good price for such magnifications! I'm planning (dreaming) to get one for quite some time.
The mount adaptors for classical cameras aren't so expensive, the problem is with the new digitals that often don't have a possibility to attach filters in front of lens.

You can also make good shots without using an adapter.
Take a look at these examples:

unfortunately I need an adapter....the digital is based on this camera and the my film camera is that one...mb-10, body and all....I'd use the medium format cams but is hard to find anything for a 1962 bronica....

the micrometer in the photo...is that reticle mounted?

Great pics! Workman also had some microscopic pics of Subaeruginosa with cystidia as well, which are quite helpful for identification.
Ps.Subaeruginosa is quite closely related to Ps.Cyanescens and can resemble both Azurescens and Cyanescens macroscopically.
Ps.Australiana is synonymous with Ps.Subaeruginosa - they are one and the same. If your not sure, check the cystidia on that mushroom and they will be hyaline.
Ps.Eucalypta is so similar to SUbaeruginosa, that its delineation pointless.
Ps.Aucklandii is closely related to Ps.Zapotecorum, which is not from the Cyanescens family, hence they are not very similar.
Have fun!

>unfortunately I need an adapter....

But...WHY? I made the photos using the camera underneath, WITHOUT an adaper, simply by pointing the objective through the ocular.
