Can contamination "drain" potency?
    #1577655 - 05/26/03 03:26 AM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I harvested a flush off of a puerto rican casing (50/50) and shortly after blue-green mold showed up in one corner. My roommate tried about 2-3 dry grams of the harvest and experienced almost no effects whatsoever. He said he felt barely noticable threshold effects at best.

Now the question is; even though the contam had not taken hold until after the first flush, could it have had an effect on the potency of the fruits?

I've scooped out the contaminated area and am watching to see what happens. Hopefully no futher contamination will develope.

Because the contaminant competes with mycelium, theorically the mycelium will be spending much of its resources to fight the contaminant with less substrate, this can be translated to less potent, less numerous, less taller and less healthy mushrooms.
In your case, this is a possibility but you also have to consider the natural potency of the strain, the kind of substrate and possible optimal environmental conditions for growth, all of this are also important factors.

How commonly does it happen that psylocybe mushrooms grow up to be weak for whatever reason?

Whats surprising is that all of our PESA that were grown in very similiar conditions and on the same substrate were extremely potent.

I guess it shouldnt be too surprising considering the randomness of nature, but it was quite interesting that 1 gram of our PESA sent us both flying pretty high and twice that dosage of another strain barely did anything.
