People go on long hiking trips for the fun, adventure and beauty. Every tool/amenity was modern at one point, so where would you draw the line if you wanted to avoid modern technology? Also, most everything hikers carry have existed for a long time (e.g. backpack, clothing, first aid kit, stove).

You could use a cheap bandana or cloth napkin as a particle filter. Whenever I went into the Appalachian mountains though I was guided by native Appalachian folks, and they just drank unfiltered and unpurified water directly from creeks with magnolia leaves.

What I don't get is all this specialized hiking, etc technology made for escaping the technological world and being in nature. Most hikers don't even hunt or eat from the wild, haha. Doesn't make a lick of sense to me, but people are really weird and many like the concept of de-evolution and have fetishes around fantasy and pretend-time and view themselves novelistically. Whatever floats your boat and such though.

Dude I just wanna show off my slide show, not argue with wordsmiths over nothing.
Quit trying to frame yourself as a chill person. You obviously don't have a "whatever floats your boat" attitude. I presume you're too lazy or incompetent to accomplish anything yourself so you shit on other people's achievements.

I was also looking into doing this, this summer. maybe we could meet up and bounce ideas off each other.
BTW, OP hell of a job. That's quite an accomplishment!

Great slideshow zappateer
About how much did the hike cost you? I've been doing research on average costs and the figure I found was around $10/day. I already have all of my gear so that isn't a concern for me. I'm thinking more about food, the occasional town stop, unforeseen expenses like the new shoes you mentioned, and of course getting to and from the trail.
Also, how often did you stop in towns along the way? Not just for resupply but like actually staying in the towns, either to get a meal or to stay for the night, or both.
I'd really love to try and do some of the trail after I graduate. I don't expect I'll be able to afford the whole thing but even just doing one state would be great.

Thank you.
Money spent on the trail was about $2500. That's not including gear bought prior to the trip or bus fare there and back. $10 a day sounds a bit scant to me, but it could certainly be done.
I stopped in towns quite a bit. There were notable exceptions, but every 4-7 days generally. Virtually every time I was in a town I got a meal and often stayed the night too. It was really hard to resist the temptations of food, alcohol and lodging when you're in a town. And you hear so much about various towns, restaurants and hostels that you wanna check em out even if you aren't trail-weary.
I would highly recommend doing all or a portion of the trail. Yeah it's costly, but cheaper than living in civilization for five months (I understand there's no income during that time tho).
Knock up a few dozen jars and put several monotubs in your closet. That should cover the trip!

I was curious and asked a simple question, calm down and stop being so oddly defensive. Eat a xanax or something, good lord.

no you didn't, you stated your shitty opinion in a topic about something you don't understand/like. a better way to phrase your "question" would be: "what's your favorite part about thru-hiking?" or something similar that shows your desire to actually gain knowledge or understanding. douche.

No, my phrasing was fine, asking what you said wouldn't accomplish that. Faggot. I guess people are really sensitive and defensive about hiking trips, I will leave it alone I guess, haha. I don't understand what the big deal is but fuck it.

Congratulations!
I hiked across the Bigelow Range around Chritmas time, it's such a great place. I really enjoyed reading all the thru-hiker journal entries in the lean-to's. I probably read one from you Zapateer.
We've got a permit set for Katahdin in a week!

Thank you.
Yeah, the Bigelows were really spectacular.
What do you mean, a permit set for katahdin in a week?

You need a permit to hike Katahdin in the winter. It should be pretty epic.

Have you thought about doing any more through hikes? The PCT looks so awesome. A few years ago I paddled on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. It goes from Northern New York to Northern Maine, 740 miles. I highly recommend it!

Yah, I intend to do the PCT once I get my bachelor's degree. There are a number of other trails I'm interested in too, nothing this summer though. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail sounds boss. I'd like to get into canoeing too.
