Good shit man
I recognized my home state of VA in a bunch of those pics. Although I do realize it takes up a good portion of the trail.
Bet it was the journey of a lifetime!
I've been dreaming of thru-hiking the AT for years. Time and money never seem to be in my favor at the same time though One day...

The Appalachian trail is 2100+ miles stretching from Maine to Georgia.
He hiked the whole thing, North to South, which only like 10% of thru-hikers do. Most people do South to North. According to his video.. June 13th - October 20th. Which is pretty fast, the average IIRC is about 4 months.
This is the best site for info - whiteblaze.net

That's awesome! Thanks, why do they mostly hike from south to north?

Because if you watch the video... the place he starts is Katahdin. The northernmost terminus of the trail. It's a huge mountain peak in Maine, which is like the holy grail of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail for Northbound hikers. Most start in Georgia and end in Maine, the trail in Georgia starts off pretty mellow and is rolling hills for a lot of the way It gets more intense once you start to get to the NE.. generally steeper terrain and rougher weather and whatnot, until you end at the summit of Katahdin.
Going Soutbound there is a whole lot less traffic heading the same way. Which I hear is the way to go if you like the solitude. Although I'm sure you run into lots of folks headed in the opposite direction.
I'd be interested to hear more about what the southbound experience was like from OP.. most of the stories your hear are from Northbounders.
Ie... did you have any SOBO hiking buddies alone the way? for how long? Another thing that interests me is gear. How did you gear pan out during the trip? As in what did you start with compared to what you ended with, end up getting rid of/swapping stuff out? I see a few well known Trail Angels in your video as well I've only done a few section hikes in the VA area.. one of these days I will do a full NOBO hike. Until then I can live vicariously through others

Yah man, slightly more than half the trail is in VA. It was one of the prettiest sections too.

Shroomism is right. Maine/New Hampshire is the hardest section, so many people don't want to cut their teeth in the hardest section. And, the solitude of a southbound hike is also considered.
There are other reasons too. Mt. Katahdin doesn't even open til late May/early June and fall/winter come early in the mountains, even in the south. Therefore, the time window for a potential thru hike is smaller for southbounders.
Also, black flies are hellabad in New England in early summer, so a lot of people don't wanna be there til later summer (which matches with the itenerary of a northbounder.
But I think the biggest reason is tradition. Thru hikes have traditionally been south-to-north. I met a lot of northbounders who never even considered a southbound hike, because it's always been done their way.

I hiked the first 1300 miles almost exclusively alone. I was around other SOBOs at first, but I passed most of them early. I met another hiker south of Shenandoah Nat'l Pk and we hiked the rest of the trail together. We also picked up three other friends along the way, and we all finished together.
Yes, I got rid of a lot of gear. The biggest theme was moving toward a lighter set up. During the trip, I switched from a pump filter to chemical drops for filtering water. I switched from traditional hiking boots to trail runners (sneakers). And I got rid of my stove and ate cold food exclusively. Toward the end of my trip, it felt like I had nothing in my pack cause there were very few superfluous items (exceptions: journal, pen, camera) I also stopped carrying a book when I met my hiking partners cause I never read anymore after that.
Yeah, there's a few well know trail angels in the video. Most notably: Rob Byrd, operator of a free hostel called The Byrd Cage. The generosity displayed by certain trail enthusiasts amazed me throughout the trip.

At first I thought it was going to be the Eminem version, then I thought no way, then it was. Wouldn't have been my first choice of music for the slideshow, but oh well. Cool video. I really want to do a thru-hike of the AT. I'm working on the Superior Hiking Trail first though.

That's cool you work on the Superior Hiking Trail. That's gonna be a piece of the North Country Trail isn't it?

The Aerosmith version. I didn't mean to criticize, by all means, whatever floats your boat. I actually used to enjoy Eminem but I haven't listened to him in quite a while. When I think of hiking my mind goes to folk/bluegrass so I was just surprised, that's all.
Oh, I meant that I am going to work on walking it, not working on the trail itself, although I'll probably head up north in spring to help get the trail ready for hiking season. They are always looking for help. Yes, it is going to be incorporated into the NCT system in the near future.

heh.. I figured as much. That's an extremely common theme on the AT, the lightening of gear and dropping of superfluous crap. whiteblaze and people I met on my section hikes was a major inspiration for my Lightweight Backpacking thread Most people start with a lot of stuff they don't need. But I guess it's better to be over-prepared than under. At least that's what you think starting out The AT is one trail in particular where going ultra-lightweight is very easy to do and also very beneficial. Aside from the lots of rain, and the NE sections..(I hear those blackflys are a bitch) its pretty mild weather-wise and resources are almost always within easy reach.
Pretty much every thru-hiker I've ever talked to starts in boots and ends in trail runners or sneakers I know what I'm starting with...
As for stove I ditched mine a long time ago and opted for a aluminum can penny stove. Weighs mere ounces (including fuel) and can boil water just as good as any fancy heavy backpacking stove out there. worth its weight in gold. I bet you saw a few people out there with one.
I could never do the aqua mira drops thing though, cant stand the taste. Plus I just don't like the idea of just killing the bacteria and having stuff still floating around in there. Lots of people don't care though. I'm just OCD about it. Also lots of fresh water spots along the way where you don't even need to filter I always carry my filter even though it adds 8 ounces or something, worth the weight to me. Even though it can be annoying to have to pump. It's a comfort item for me.
I remember one guy on here a few years ago attempted a NOBO thru-hike, I think he made it about 1800 miles then had to quit due to a sprained ankle =/ I think he said when he started his pack weighed about 40 lbs base weight.. by the time he finished he had it down to 10
oh and IIRC = If I remember correctly

I really need to build a penny stove before my hike this summer. I have a Whisperlite but that thing is heavy compared to a soda can. I also don't think I can do the Aqua Mira though, I think I'll stick with my MSR filter, even though it weighs a pound. I am also allergic to shellfish (iodine) so I feel like it wouldn't be a good idea.

I don't understand why people go on long hiking trips, and if they do then why they carry modern amenities and tools.

Yeah, that's so true about the AT allowing you to go super light.
For me, I never noticed the Aqua mira taste, but I agree with you about the dead organisms floating in there. Also, I don't like the idea of consuming toxic chemicals. That's why I stuck with the filter so long, but those filter cartridges don't last very long. I was having to replace mine every 4 or 500 miles and they're really expensive. Also, as your filter gets more use it takes a lot of time and energy to pump even if you clean it. Very, very few thru hikers carry pumps. You don't wanna be sitting at the water hole for a half hour, when it takes your friends just a few seconds to drop chemicals in!
