VA ?Mush?Shrooms?
    #1577400 - 05/26/03 01:17 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Hopefully these pics show. I don?t think I?ve seen these in the state and they look to be bluing. Spore prints were black/darkpurple. The picture of the small mushy mushrooms that resemble melting P.pelliculosa and P. semilanceata did not get taken for tests. Any guesses on these? Environment--> Civ.War battlefield on a wooded  slope (the woods are well aged and mushrooms growing everywhere).

Hmmm...they are kinda looking like haymaker mushrooms, but aren?t subs smaller and less brightly colored?

Hmmm, they didn?t come out as thumbnails, but at least the pics are showing.

Looks like yall are right.  I finally found it in my guide and it matches up (except the claimed season and gill color).  This is yet another member of the psathyrella family that had my hopes up.  *#$%...Last year it was the velvety Psathy and corrugated psathy, Psathyrella foenisecii, and now Psathyrella hydrophila (i think).  Fooled yet again.  D_mnit.

The last photo was probably a group of rotting baby 'common mycenas'.

Is there anything in Virginia that might be worth looking for at this time in the season?  I have yet to find a sub, supposedly somewhat more common than other psilocybes in VA.  Maybe I'll just start licking toads....tons of 'em out here... :frown: .  Oh well.

all the toads in your area are toxic, the only feelng you will obtain is sillyness. if you dont die.
Bufo alvaris is the hallucinogenic one and inhabits a small area in the southwest states.

you might find some pan subbs in VA if you leave the woods and go to some riding stables or cow pastures. because you are very unlikely to find any woodland actives this time of year, and it will probably never be worth your while if you do even when they DO fruit, (ex, gyms, big but weak and bitter)
dry dung heaps, if you cant find any, heres a tip, ask a cow farmer if yuou can rummage his dung heap for grubs for some pet (lizard or hedgehog for example). composted dung is FULL of big fat white beelte grubs and if he says you wont find any offer to show him, i guarentee they will be abundant (like 5-6 per cubic foot) at this point he may leave you alone to gather as long as you respect him and be polite.
bring 2 bags, put the occasional gub in one in case he checks on you, make sure you leave the areas without mushrooms well rummaged, that way your storty is beleiveable and you can return later after rains for more mushrooms. trust me it works, in fact it works so well i have at least one farmers grub infested dung-compost heap innoculated with a few liters of golden teacher spawned on rye.
