Weilii imposter: Psathyrella velutina, a pictorial guide.
    #1577376 - 05/26/03 01:05 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I've seen that a lot of people have been having problems telling the difference between Psilocybe weilii and Psathyrella velutina. I'm hoping I can help fix that problem with this post.

First off, Psathyrella velutina(a nonactive mushroom) is VERY common. Much more so than weilii. They are found primarily in grass. If you're finding these guys, chances are that weilii COULD be within a mile of where you're finding them.

One thing that you'll notice about them is that the stem will snap very readily. Weilii have very tough rubbery stems, they won't just break like the Psathyrellas will.

Psathyrellas are fairly easy to just pull out of the ground, weilii hold on like there's no tomorrow.

Psathyrellas also tend to have an orange to light brown "nipple" at the top of the cap when they're young. If you see that orange nipple, it's a dead give away that you've got an imposter. Weilii's will have a dark brown to almost black nipple-- if they have one at all.

Psathyrellas also have a dull cap, weilii typicaly have a waxy, almost slimy looking cap.

The last thing- the smell of weilii is unmistakable. Psathyrellas smell like regular ol' mushrooms.

Here's some pics to help explain some things:

A patch of Psathyrella velutina, from a distance they could easily be mistaken for Psilocybe weilii.

Another patch... You can see the orange nipple's I was talking about on these specimens.

Notice how the cap of P. velutina has a "furry" apparence to it. If you're in doubt, look at the cap up close, if it looks like the one in the picture... keep on looking.

This is a picture of remnants of the veil on Psathyrella velutina. If you see the black fiberous material on the stem near the cap- it's a dead give away that you've got P. velutina and not Ps. weilii.
Also notice how the stem itself is very fibrous- yet another dead give away of P. velutina.

The gills of P. velutina. You can see some remnants of the veil on the margin of the cap. Another dead give away.

I hope this post has helped all the Psilocybe weilii hunters out at least a little bit.
Just remember, if you're finding these Psathyrellas, chances are that weilii are somewhere near.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.

Nice photos and great tips.

Now we just have to get the people who need to see this to actually read it and maybe learn from it.

Happy mushrooming!

Very nice description. It's really a very common species. I usually find them in disturbed areas, along or even in the middle of forest trails.

according to aurora's book, it is "widely distributed." i would say it is probably locally abundant in some areas less frequent in others like many "widely distributed" mushrooms.

I'd really say jet black from what I've seen.

Yeah, I'd agree they can look jet black. When I examined one under a bright light, though, it did seem to have a slight brownish tint. So that's why I wasn't inclined to say jet black.

Actually those don't look too much like weilii. I've seen imposters that are MUCH MUCH closer; waxy tops, ridged edges, nipple, color, even the smell is faint to that of a weilii; All weilii-esque except for bluing.
