P. Subbs??
    #1577272 - 05/26/03 12:12 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Greetings,

While strolling around the neighbourhood this evening (greater Toronto) I found a patch of the below species surrounding a small cedar tree on a sloping grassy boulevard. The stems are all less than a cm. and max out at about 3" long. The underside appears black as does the spore print - maybee with a slight purple tinge. Any opinions?

Thanks.

Nope, sorry. Those are inky caps (coprinus). Not sure what species though.

Good old Coprinus micaceus.

Like ToxicMan said in another post, give them a few hours and you'll have a puddle of inky goo.

They're not active, but edible. They're poisonous when alcohol is consumed within 5-7 days of eating them.

Nice, well focused pictures with lots of good detail. And exactly what Gumby said.

If you're thinking of eating them, do it while the gills are still white.

There sure are a lot of those getting posted out here lately.

Happy mushrooming!
