Re: Cakes are not meant to be cased!!!

My pf's were much happier it seemed when i did the casing thing.Let me explain...first several tries with straight pf tek(i mean to the letter)the cakes became very dried out and i could tell, through communicating directly with the shrooms that they could be happier.(more optimum conditions)
I have always adapted my tek to something that works better than the last time.I improved the chamber with better temp/humidity control but I also made another important change.
I took a tupperware container about 9 by
18 inches long and lined it with al foil. Then I put 1 to 2 inches sterilized Mckenna mix in bottom(soil/peat/vermic/sand/lime or oyster ground up)
Then i placed the straight pf cakes in their new home and i covered them with some more casing mix. I actually ran out of enough casing to fully and evenly cover the cakes but i left it anyway. I sprayed the casing soil but not too much, soon after, many little pins popping up.They were the little round shapes of fat pf's before they elongate and reach their classic shape. They grew much better because I could tell the casing soil maintained its moisture well. Each cake had many more pins compared to when i had the little cakes naked on their lids.I would say
average 15 pins per cake compared to 3-5 at most.
The next time i will use a whole grain substrate and case it(PF strain)to get denser fruits. I wont use the pf recipe again unless
casings dont work and in-vitro primordiazation is needed, although i feel im just recently past this barrier i was at.

i disagree.
pf himself recommends cakes be cased at both ends with vermiculite.
perhaps it is not neccessary for pf's classic 'amazonian' strain, but for most of the other strains, it is needed to help pinning before the cake dries out.
and there is quite a bit of food in pf-stle cakes, more than enough to support multiple flushes if given additional moisture via casing or straw.

Hippee, Hippee, Hippee...

Mycelium meant traditional casing in trays, not PF's double ended tek. In PF cakes, there is only 1/4 cup of nutirents (using max fruiting formula) and in Ryches cakes there is a 3/4 cup of nutrients, more if you dont use verm. M5150 is not saying its impossible, just ill-advised.

You don't have to disagree with everyone, just give your own view (I know, I'm guilty of this too, but I'm working on it).

I myself, rarely use cakes at all now. Bulk substrate in Qt or 1/2 gal jar is much more efficient. Just my veiw, not that anyone else is wrong

....I did so (but Shroomwiz recipe..makes no difference) and had very very good results....I never used 1/2 pintsa allways pints, but I) deffinetly have to dissagree..

I grew very successfull by crumbling the cakes and casing them
