My first mini-mono =D w/pics

Here it is! After doing many cakes and just recently starting on trays, i set my foot down and started off with a mini mono.
I'm not sure how many qts this tub is, its a small tub, maybe 5 gallons.. I cut a square off the top of the tub, then cut a square from the bottom of a tupperware and put it on there with silicone which was still smelling a little bit when I prepped everything, i REALLY hope this doesnt affect the myc.. I cut 4 1inch x 1inch squares, two, which are leveled with the substrate(long ways, pictured), and two which are higher up then covered them all up with duct tape.

I made whole brown rice cakes (100% whole brown rice, no verm or anything added) that were put into a 1pt jar and filled about 3/4ths of the way up. I ran a test to see how much dry coir i would need to fill a jar 3/4th of the way and it was right at 25g dry. I used 100 DRY(4 jars, 25g per jar) grams of coir, 120 grams of vermiculite(30g verm to fill a jar 3/4th) and did followed damion5050 pasteurization method with 4 1/2 cups of water. I left the verm/coir alone for 8 hours.

Broke up the cakes down to a 2-3 grain size (rice grains)

I then put down the substrate, mixed it well with a spoon that was sitting in boiling water for 5 minutes (cooled before use) then I added the spawn:

Mixed very well and topped it off with a very very very thin layer of substrate then put the lid back on and put it on top of my shelf:

Thank you all I'm extremely anxious!!
By the way, will the silicone smell have any negatives?

cool. but im curious as to why you didnt just use a clear tub and tape up the bottom? and it sounded like u weren't going to privide any FAE while ur substrate is recolonizing "I will fill with polyfill when I;m ready to fruit" cause IME it can be dangerous to not provide FAE even when re-colonization.. your avatar pic is bad ass btw.

i shouldve specified; i fan less than half as often during colonization but no FAE at all just seems risky to me. but for some weird reason in this hobby something s work for some people while other things work for others.

All you need during colonization is GE not FaE.. Mycelium benefits from high co2. FAE is for fruiting stage only. If you give colonizing substrate FAE then your gonna get premature pinning.

Thanks everyone! I'm wondering if I should make 2 more 1x1 inch holes on the long sides??(when im ready to fruit) I seen a mmonotub that was about the size of mine and it had 2 holes per side (leveled with substrate) and then 2 on the short sides, 6 total holes

I don't see how 2 more holes would hurt anything, it would give you more FAE. So I say go for it man. M.D

that makes perfect sense. Gas exchange rather than FAE , great way to explain it.

Wow....
First off to OP, your doing fine, however next time don't worry about the layer on top, it will take more time to colonize and can increase contam chances... If you want to do a casing, I'd suggest getting a 50/50 peat/verm casing ready after your tub is at 100%
Casing is not needed with cubes FYI
I leave all my holes taped, and just put the lid on and the natural gaps between lid and tub will be enough for GAS EXCHANGE (GE).
To fix the info in this thread, you do NOT NEED or WANT "FAE" or fresh air exchange during colonization. That can cause issues with fruiting. You want to remove tape, and stuff polyfil lightly when introducing to fruiting conditions.
Any more questions feel free to ask, and have fun!! looks like you know pretty well what you are doing

Just prepare it as if you were going to have dinner but add nothing to it (salt butter, etc lol) it usually takes 30-45 minutes for brown rice to cook.. just follow the directions on the back of the bag.

Here is a picture at day 10:

I think I will scoop what you see uncolonized out because its been like that for the past 2 days now, ive seen not much growht. 2 days ago I though it would be time to fruit, but not much has changed since. It has a good mushroom smell so I'm not too worried about contams. Also, the stuff that is on top is "fluffly" and not stuck to the myc, thats why I dont see a problem with scooping it out

Yes, you were right, skittles. So you just pressure cook after cooking the rice? Is that the end of the process? lol. Why are more people not doing this? Have you tried it in larger jars? Just curiousity over here. haha

Well after 2 days, it looks the same so I did what I mentioned above. I scooped out the uncolonized substrate (it was a tiny bit) and fanned it once, polyfilled the holes and put a light on it.
Before I scooped it out (i cleaned spoon with alcohol)

With the light on

substrate depth (2.5inches)

Myc loves some ductape!

Also, for my next monotub (in a few days, grains almost ready) I will make sure to level the substrate/spawn mix better, this one is pretty uneven

I wonder why that one spot never got colonized... Did you cover everything with a layer of substrate after mixing? Or did you leave a couple exposed grains?

Willy Wonka said: Huh you caught my attention with that. Plus points for thinking outside the box. I like it. What do you do to hydrate the rice before inoculating?
Just prepare it as if you were going to have dinner but add nothing to it (salt butter, etc lol) it usually takes 30-45 minutes for brown rice to cook.. just follow the directions on the back of the bag.
First off, nice grow man!
Suggestions: You should try out wild bird seed instead of whole brown rice. It will work just as well and cost a whole lot less.

this is my first monotub, and my first time working with a grain, which seems to be not too common, so before i went all out i wanted to try a small one. I'm in the process of making 5 more 5 gallon monos, if any get contaminated (knock on wood) there will be less waste

I spawned it 20 days ago. I just finished spawning a second one literally 5 minutes ago. I did everything identical, but for this one I used an extra pint of spawn, its like a 1.5:1 substrate:spawn
Also, mannnn is the substrate shrinking! It shrinks significantly over-night, those mushies are really sucking it dry! (sounds bad lol)

I weighed and measured the amounts until they were to field capacity and concluded that for a 1pt jar of spawn at a 2:1 ratio I would need 25 grams of dry coir, 1.125 cups of water and 30g of vermiculite which seems to work. I successfully did it for a tray, this monotub and one that is colonizing now (and is looking good!)
