How to choose a bag for pasteurization?
    #15768181 - 02/06/12 12:40 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I've been told to get "3 mil contractor bags".

I have one site where I can choose plastic bags for myself. As I understand I'll have to aim for HDPE as it melts at 110C, right?

So I have two categories to choose from:

a) Bags for special purposes (HDPE, 20 mic)
1) 400mm x 600mm
2) 500mm x 800mm

b) Trashbags (HDPE)
..for those there's just too big of a list.

What to pick?

Unfortunately I can't go to walmart and ask for "3 mil contractor bags" as I don't have walmart neither lowes and when I go to my local hardware store I'm just not sure what to look for.. or if they even have these.

Help.

I use Glad or Ziplock brand hard plastic containers. They come in many different sizes and can withstand the temps of pastuerization and Pressure cooking just fine. They are easy to work with and you do not feel bad if you have to throw one away.  Any container that is rated Recycle-5 should work.  Sometimes you can find them in dollar stores for real cheap.
