I just got back from shopping for mushroom food I wanted to get what I normally use (rye grass seed) but I couldn't find untreated seed anywhere, guess its just a bad time of year? but I did find an entire isle devoted to Wild Bird Seed, after a little sorting and initial sticker shock 10 bucks for a 5 pound bag I found a plain assorted 20 lb seed bag for 8 bucks!
how should I prepare these? is soaking necessary? is weak coffee beneficial as in rye seed?

1) Bird seed is definitely the way to go. Add 6 jars worth per case of jars wanted. Process like rye: Rinse with normal tap water and drain.
2) Add enough water to cover seed by the depth of the birdseed and cook until 175 dec F. Note: If you have very hard tap water add a few gallons of distilled or spring water.
3) Let soak overnight and rinse the birdseed.
4) fill jars to 2/3 full of seed and PC as usual ~ 2 hrs at 15 PSI. Adding some vermiculite to the birdseed and some gypsum makes it easy to shake the jars later. Adding coffee as a soak may help add nitrogen, would be more suited to edibles like crimini.
