Overpowered Blower
    #1576499 - 05/25/03 04:43 PM (14 years, 3 days ago)

Hey all

I finally picked up a blower- only to find that its overpowered 700cfm @ 300 pa. I figured i woul need about 340cfm at 300 pa (1.2")- obviosly this is quite a bit, so im going to go with a thicker prefilter...
the question is
1) how thick of a prefilter should I use?
and
2) how can i tell if this thicker prefilter hasnt left me under/over power???

Many thanks for any help you can offer me!!!!

Just use 2 of the hepas you were originally going to use. 2x as thick requires 2x the cfm. Seems like it would work, but I don't know for sure

I would use a normal prefilter & a power regulator for the fan so you can manually set it.

The front air speed should be 0.5 m/s - but don't ask me how to measure that.

A "magnahelic" gauge will t4est the flow. Any good air/con repair place will have one & test it for you........if you sweet talk them. You can also find them on eBay for cheap.

Rule of thumb is that it will blow out a candle & you are good to go.

You can also build a baffle plate to control the flow ( two sheets of thin plywood - back to back, with a pattern of 1 inch holes drilled through it... then offset..... with a threaded rod to a knob......... that you adjust to line then up -- or offset them -- placed between the blower & filter).

My foaf had a miss/matched blower & filter & that is what he did. He also used flat automotive fillters........ as pre/filters.

A slight breeze would probably be a good comparison.
If the wind is so strong that it blows your petri dishes?lids away, or spores if you transfer them from a print to water, then it?s too strong.
You can also test it using an incense stick or a cigarette, then you?ll approximately see how fast the air is.
0.5 m/s is not much, but it?s all that is required.

Wicked! thanks for the help fellas!

Well, the porblem with this was the company I bought the filter from never supplied me any data about the filter itself. It was a replacement filter for a HEPA unit- and they didnt give me much info about it. So i am going with a default calculation- which i hope is ballpark cause its all i have to go on.

Might be worth grabbing a filter here. It'll cost about 100$, and you'll know exactly what you're working with.

http://www.filtersrx.com/sizes.asp?CAT=HEPHM9

http://www.filtersrx.com/sizes.asp?CAT=HEPHM7

99.97% and 99.99%

then you can actually rather than match your blower to that filter, match the filter to your blower, andy ou might end up with a larger work area. If you have a blower pushing 700cfm at 1.2", you could definantly use a larger area filter.

I don't remember how to accurately calculate how much air you need to push. But I believe a 2x2 filter will be about 700cfm, but that's at .8" - you'll need to see your blower curve to know how it will act at .8" than 1.2"
