Fruiting Sclerotia
    #15763891 - 02/05/12 10:48 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

If I had a fully colonized jar of a sclerotia producing species, would it be possible to get fruits before harvesting the sclerotia?

Could I--

1. apply a casing layer to the space between the colonized rye grain and the top of the quart jar,
2. let it colonize for a few days,
3. expose it to dryer conditions with the top open for a day or four,
4. followed by a bout of moisture,
5. with the sides of the jar wrapped to keep light out,

--and expect to get fruits from the top?

Or is it just easier to do the tried and true method of placing a few larger stones in a casing to get mushrooms for prints? I've looked around for the answer, but its been fruitless.  :rimshot2:

*I've had a hard time finding a picture online to explain what I'm generally talking about, so for reference see Mycelium Running, page 286, figure 336.*

You don't have to do anything extraordinary to fruit these species.  No drying period is needed.  You don't even need to wait for sclerotia to form in a the jar before fruiting.  You can case grains as soon as they are completely colonized.

You can treat them pretty much like cubensis but they need more air exchange to do well and they take longer to pin.  Casing your jars directly should work if you have a good fruiting environment.  Covering the sides to block out light isn't necessary, these species are not prone to side pinning.  Good luck!
