Casing not colonizing - Help really appreciated
    #15761776 - 02/04/12 07:33 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi!

I've tried my first experiment at mushroom cultivation. The jars colonized in about two weeks, and then I laid the colonized grain down on a tray over a thin layer of hydrated vermiculite and covered it with a mixture of 50% vermiculite, 50% peat and over that an additional 10% calcium carbonate. I hydrated the casing by mixing it well and then taking 10% out, I watered the rest until it was saturated and then added back that 10%. I didn't sterilize or pasteurize it so maybe there lies my mistake...

I then put it in a tub, and filled the bottom with hydrated perlite, about a 1.5 inch layer. On top of that is the tray and these two jars that I just cased without taking out.

The tub isn't totally sealed, just the lid normally closed. After two days, one or two thick threads of mycelium showed up on the surface, but then I thought it wasn't wet enough so I gave it a very fine misting, with not a lot of water (now I think it actually was wet enough). Now, about 9 days later, the thick strands that had appeared haven't grown or appeared anywhere else, and the whole casing is covered by a thin, cottony layer, almost invisible (but it can be seen in the pictures).

Its important to note that I've opened the tub a few times because I couldn't really see inside, all walls and lid had formed condensation.

Temperature here is around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).

So, my questions are:
- What have I done wrong? Is there a way I can fix it now? What should I do now?
- What should I do differently on my next jars to ensure better results?

Thanks A LOT!

Its sounds to hot and too wet. Pasteurize next time.

Can you get a close up pic of the white fluffy growth?

These pics turned out pretty good (click for a super large version):

Regarding temperature, I think there's not much I can do, its summer here, and I don't have an air conditioning unit :frown:

looks like cobweb to me... will happen every time if you dont pasteurize...

There even looks to be some discoloration...  looks like something bad fixing to happen...  Id take it outside and leave it there to see if anything MAY pop up out of it...  in the meantime, start over...  following the techs to a "T".

I really think you could still get some mushrooms out of that though. You could use some peroxide for the cobweb and if there are no other contams give it some more time, otherwise fruit it outside somewhere.

Well, I'm going to try spraying with peroxide to see if I can get anything at all out of it, I haven't got any other jars ready to fruit anyway...

Thanks a lot to all of you!
