A little help please?
    #15760695 - 02/04/12 03:07 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So, my spores and jars finally arrived. Before growing the Ecuador strain, I'm going to grow some of this.

As for the jars, I was lucky enough to get some of these for free. They look just like the pictures, except filled all the way to the top, and more finely ground.

I have some medium-sized see thru containers available (about a foot high, 2 feet long, 1 foot wide).

I understand I should keep the moisture highish and 75-85 degrees, but just to confirm, when am I gonna take the cakes out of the jars? Also, should they be in the Rubbermaid from inoculation?

Also, once again, they are filled to the top. Will this hinder my efforts?

You dont want a high humidity % when the jars are colonizing. Keep them at room tempature, stay away from the 80's. You want your jars to colonize around the mid 70's. Contams like to grow around the higher temps and mushroom mycelium will actually begin to slow down in growth in the mid 80's. Its ok if the jars are filled to the top. When you inject the spores, try to aim on the outer surface. So you can see the spore solution fall down the glass. This will  allow you to spot growth early and see if your spores are bad.

from what i can see those jars have rye in them. For the best results you should crumble them up and spawn them to a bulk substrate like coir once they are fully colonized.

Not 100% sure what you mean, do I crumble them up mixed in (how much?) coir, and then inoculate?

Or do I wait till there is some mycelium and then crumble it up in the coir?

And could I do this without the coir, if need be?

Sure.

Actually not everyone was a noob.  Being a noob is a very new phenomenon.  Many people, the great majority in fact, were simply "beginners", "novices" or "new to mushroom growing".  Being a "noob" is reserved, and in fact created specifically for and by, the newer, much more lame generations coming about.
