how to salvage my cracked monotub
    #15760579 - 02/04/12 02:38 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

While drilling the holes for my monotub, I got careless:

How to remedy this? Can I still use the bigger hole as my filter by covering it with tyvek instead of polyfil and using a bigger patch than the other holes?

Or might one of the filter holes being too big and awkwardly shaped be a problem?

The hole doesn't have to be round

Duct tape

This.

I didn't have a drill when I moved out of my house and into the new apartment.  I cut the "holes" in with knives.  They're squares with a few cracks.  You can easily cover them up with tape.  I'd suggest putting it on both sides so that your polyfil doesn't get stuck.

My holes are larger than yours and I haven't had any issues.

I find it easier to heat up a piece of metal the size of the hole you want and use that to melt a hole into it.

Packaging tape looks a little nicer. That's what I use. And unlike duct tape it won't leave a residue when you remove it. Burning holes sounds kind of... toxic.

But whatever works. There's many ways to grow mushrooms.

thanks everyone for the tips!

But what about my suggested tyvek method? I'm going by this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7490393
and as you can see, in it, he uses tyvek for the bottom holes instead of polyfil. What i want to do is just use tyvek for the hole that was cracked, instead of polyfil, using a larger patch than the one monstermitch uses (because my hole is larger and cracked), but if the size of the filter hole matters I can't do this. Does the size of the filter hole or the space between the two holes matter? What might this affect with the growth if anything?

If the hole is bigger, it will let in more air.
I'm sure different filter materials will let in different amounts of air, but I don't know any specifics.
Hole placement/size is up for debate.
I think with those 8 holes you have, whether you make the big one smaller or not, you should be ok with what ever you filter it with. I would imagine Mitch uses tyvek on the bottom to prevent fruits from getting filled with poly-fil.
