Two quick questions.

1) The syringe arrived, but it has a black cloud floating around inside. Bad, good? Is that normal and as usual I'm too much of a dummy to know.
2) Gypsum? What exactly does it do for your grow, and is it necessarily. Also what exactly do you do with it? Just mix it in with the substrate?

I have never seen a syringe with a cloud in it! (???) clumped spores? I truly don't know about that.
Gypsum is added to aid in strong fruit growth.

The little black specks are the spores. Gypsum helps with nutrient balance (calcium and sulfur).
Not to be a dick, but both these questions are answerable via le' shroomery search field.

I had the same thing, and I think it sucks. It's hard to get the spores to seperate when you shake them up and when you go to inoculate the jars, you are lucky if 1/2 of them colonize. I did read a post on here where a guy had the same problem with this bull shit way of making clump syringes IMO, he let his syringe warm up to room temp. before he shook to break them up. He said it did a much better job of breaking up then when it was cold. If I ever get another clumped syringe, Im going to give that a shot. I hope it never happens again, as I prefer the kind of syringe you look at and say damn they forgot to put the spores in, but then you look under a microscope and bam there they are.

Odd, same thing here. I have to look really closely to see the dust-like specs. Strangely, the cubensis are black and the oyster spores are white?

Oops, I was responding to kansastornado.
@Sara, it's probably just a lot of spores.

For syringes that have clumped spores consider holding the needle under a flame (lighter or alcohol lamp) and draw some air in. After you have some air in the syringe re-cap it. Now when you shake the syringe it is much easier to disrupt the clump of spores.
Best wishes for your grow.

I would recommend against this. Although the needle itself will be flame sterilized, the air that you draw in is going to contain contaminants that could propagate into your grow.

Hey Treefeeler,
Have a read http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek#beimpfung
You simply will not draw contaminates into a syringe that is suitably placed in a flame. It just won't happen. This has been recommended by many experienced cultivators. Sterility is only as great as the least sterile step in sum. As far as things go, in a home setting (not using laminar flow hood), this is about as low risk as you can get.

I personally would never in my life bring air inside a syringe. Just shake it up as hard as you can. Even if there are tiny black dots floating around in there, it will still work...worked for me
