How does this sound for bulk?

Iv done some research and came up with a method id like to try for my first bulk attempt. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated.
I will use Pennington's WBS for my 1qt jars. this tek for lids http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14186384#14186384
For my tub I will make one like Monstermitch shows here. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7490393/an/0/page/0
For my substrate I was thinking 1 brick of coco coir, 4qts water and 2qts verm. Maybe some gypsum? Following this tek by Damion5050 http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11917410
A casing layer of 50% verm and 50% peat moss.
Questions... - Do you crumble the WBS cakes or leave them whole when mixing with the substrate? - After tub has been fully colonized by introducing to "fruiting conditions" I take it that means 12/12 light cycle, misting and fanning? - What kind of stores carry Synthetic Filter Discs? - In Damion5050's tek is says to add 5 WBS cakes is 5 necessary or can I get away with 2 or 3? - How often do you shake jars? I was thinking once after inoculation, again at 10% and a final shake at 50%.

1. Crumble. 2. Fresh air is the biggest fruiting trigger. 3. Internet. maybe scientific supply stores if you can find one. 4. The higher the spawn ratio the faster it will colonize= less chance of contams.

Do you mean I should mist and fan before and after pinning?

I know there are many members who have had success using Damion5050's coir tek. Gonna try it out myself as soon as my grains are finished colonizing. From the research that I have done on this method a casing layer is not necessary. Just a thin layer of substrate to top off any exposed grains. But I guess it couldn't hurt.

Yes crumble them and mix thoroughly with the substrate

Yes wait until your substrate is fully colonized as well as give the substrate extra time to consolidate before inducing fruiting conditions. If you are still going to use the casing layer I believe it is applied once the substrate is 100% colonized. Then wait until the myc begins to show through the casing layer before inducing fruiting conditions. I'm not too familiar with casing techniques though, but I believe this is the proper procedure.

Damion5050's tek calls for 5qts of spawn. This ends up being a lot more than just 5 cakes even if they are in qt jars. If 5qts is used it ends up being a 1:2 ratio which many have had success with. Some like to use a 1:1 ratio so that the substrate colonizes quicker and helps prevent contams. I have read that there are some that have had success with 1:3 and 1:4 ratios as well, just takes longer to colonize. Either way you will def need more than 5 cakes.

Are you sure? In the picture is shows five jars next to the tub... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11917410

Just noticed that you just added a question
Quote:

It depends on what you are using to inoculate your jars with. LC you would shake once right after nocing up. If using a spore syringe I like to wait until about 20% colonization and shake once. I think anything more than that is actually slowing up colonization

Your right. In that pic it does show 5 qt jars, but if you read the thread for the tek (which I did when it was at 60 or 70 something pages. Probably even more now) Damion5050 says that he uses bags for his grains that he loads with 5qts of grains in each bag. The topic is discussed throughout the thread when many different people ask how many cakes should be used to compensate. It all comes down to how full your jars are. Doesn't have to be exact, but you are aiming for 5 actual qts of spawn.

Thats true didnt make that comparison. How many 1qt jars would you recomend using with 1 brick of coir?

I have read that to much shaking would distrube the growth. It makes sence to me shaking after inoculation have you ever tryed this?

Can't really say without knowing how full your jars are. Also I cant remember when reading the thread if there were any adjustments that needed to be made when using WBS instead of grains. There is a thread with the tek instead of just the tek itself with pages and pages of discussion about it in which Damion5050 answers any and every question that people came up with.

Yes you want to shake your jars to help speed up growth. If you noced them up with a LC you want to shake right after so that it is spread throughout the jar. If you shake again you will only be slowing down colonization because the myc takes time to recover every time you shake.
When using a spore syringe you don't want to shake right away so that the spores stay close together to germinate. Once you have some mycelial growth in one area you can shake the jar to try and distribute this growth throughout the jar. The myc will take some time to recover, but when it does it will be more evenly distributed throughout the jar and growth will continue from many points instead of just one. Shaking again after this point will only slow things up because the myc is already evenly distributed. This is why I like to wait until about 20% so that when you shake there is enough myc to be spread throughout the jar.

You don't need to change anything when using WBS, as long it is prepared properly it doesn't matter what you use.
Also, I would use at least 4 quarts of spawn with that method, that way your tub will colonize quick and be ready to fruit in under two weeks in most scenarios.

Yeah like I said there are so many pages to read through that it is intimidating, but there is a lot of important info concerning the tek as well as many questions answered by Damion5050 pertaining to specifics of the tek.

I would go by dry weight ans the assumption that most measurements are in powder form, because thats what most people use. Using that much may alter the PH of your substrate enough to cause you problems.

You say use at least 4qts spawn. If im using 1qt jars filled to 3/4 that would mean I should use atleast 6 jars to give me 4.5qts of spawn. Ill do 7 jars at 3/4 full giving me 5 and 1/4 qts of spawn. I think that should be enough.
