question about senescence
#15755433 - 02/03/12 10:50 AM (12 years, 11 months ago) |

i cloned an oyster cluster from the grocery store to cardboard then spawned the cardboard to straw
i was curious if i could take another clone when it fruits, but since i got it from the store it could be close to senescence from what i understand
when the mycelium gets old does it just stop growing? would it be fine to take a spore print from these and start over or would i be better off just ordering a new culture to start from
it would be nice to keep this going since it was basically free
thanks

Try with the spores. It's better

Not necessarily better. Depends on desired result. You get a larger variety of genetics with spores than tissue clones. Tissue clones are faster.

Tissue clones are also reasonably narrowed-down to mycelium with genetics that will fruit. Getting to that point with edibles from spore may sorta suck.
From a store, you won't find out about senescence until it makes itself evident. It wouldn't seem to me that using cultures anywhere close to it would be conducive to commercial growing... They sure wouldn't have to either. I bet you could get a few generations from it, and a "master" could serve you for a good while.

No particular reason for that - just give it a shot. Comments are correct about spores, you'll be resetting the genetics on whatever particular strain the grower is producing.

thanks for the respsonses i actually put a piece of the cardboard into a jar with agar before i spawned it also, its grown out now so i think i could use that as a kind of a "master" to pull from and make working jars of glc or lc or would i be better off to make another transfer first?

This is what i was curious if it would just stop growing and then i would know
well i'll try cloning anyway and take some prints why not right good for practice

The main sign of senescence is the culture will grow and expand fine, but simply won't fruit, therefore wasting all your time.
If you're seriously interested in edibles, clone from the wild or obtain a professional culture and then keep it in slants under refrigeration at all times. RR

cool thanks for answering that hopefully it'll fruit then the mycelium is really eating the straw up sounds like i am better off getting a culture then
if it does fruit i still think i'll try some prints out
