my moisture content wasn't perfect on these jars and they arent colonizing on the top. should i shake these or will they colonize without? can't upload photo at the moment but its pretty much a totally colonized jar with just the very top most layer still exposed.

as long as its a grain jar, go ahead and shake if you want, otherwise if the myc is fully taken over and just the top layer isn't colonized (due to being dry), then you should be able to dump the excess grain out by tipping the jar. Then just break the grain up as normal for spawn

I always tell people to wash un-colonized cake off before dunking instead of cutting the cake. easier to introduce contams imo.

If it's almost done then id leave it, unless it was really dragging on then I'd shake it.

Shroomery pic and file uploads are temporarily disabled. You could post the pic online via another image host, then link to the file. Without pics is going to be hard to tell.
If your growth has stalled however, I would say that shaking might help. But I would be most concerned with figuring out why the jar stalled in the first place. I would troubleshoot that before you do anything.

Sounds to me that you're spot-on about the reason the top layer of the rye isn't colonizing. Grains closest to the gas-exchange filter who's moisture content isn't correct in the first place (too dry) is very common for them to dry up before the mycelium can colonize them there. Mushroom mycelium won't colonize overly dehydrated grains. I shake when this happens. The shake redistributes the dry grains with moistened, colonized ones causing them to become colonized as well as, closes vectors for contamination spawning to bulk, un-colonized grains can/will cause. If your spawn is clean, the mycelium will recover rapidly and re-colonize the grains with in an average of 5 days.

fuck are you using substrate-wise?
on rye and birdseed, you wanna shake anyway pretty sure (right?)
You do NOT wanna shake on verm. that top dry layer even straight outta the PC is supposed to be there as a barrier against contams.
If they ARE verm brf... you could flip em, but you might not want to... it messes with Gas Exchange. introduce it to some light, preferably on a 12/12 circadian rhythm
Hope this provides you with some solace

Standard-averagely, grain jars are to be shaken at 20-30% colonization, if you opt to shake at all.
