first grow - a few questions
    #15750318 - 02/02/12 02:22 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hi so I am in the process of setting up my first grow. I am going to be doing a PF tek. I have everything to build my glove box and setup my jars i just had a question about heating. I have an apartment with those wall heaters in each room. In the room I will be growing in theres a wall heater and a closet. I was thinking of using the closet space but I may just put it in the room so. Does anyone have any experience using the wall heaters. What are some tips at regulating temps with those. Are they consistant enough or should i get some sort of heating device and leave it off maybe an aquarium heater.

For the terrarium i was going to use perlite in a monotub. And an airpump for FAE. I was going to keep a bubbler stone on hand if humidity levels are low and leave a place to install it.. I am mostly worried about the heating now. The wall heaters work well but i was going to keep a close eye on it. Should i seal off the door from the rest of the house to keep the temperature more regulated?

Sorry if im a bit confusing this is my first time thanks!!!

I keep mine at room temp. That's around 70 degrees. I have a wall heater as well but find no need for it other than keeping the room comfortable. I would reccomend the shotgun fruiting chamber that's what I'm using currently. I can't say anything on what your planning on using but the sgfc has given me optimal results.

The links to both the tek for ShotGun Fruiting Chambers (SGFC) and the tek for heat bombs is in my sig. These should help you for both your questions.

By "wall heater" do you mean a unit which passes air through a heated element, or a radiant space heater which uses convection without actually pushing any air?

The air in a grow area should remain mostly still, except for the natural flow of convection currents. colonizing jars and fruiting chamber should not be kept close to any device which pushes large amounts of air, not even air purifiers!

First of to answer one of your questions, you don't have to seal off the door for temp control.  At least I have never.  Just make sure that everything around the door outside is clean and dust free.  Personally I keep the my whole room, where the closet, at a regulated temp(typically -4% to the +4% range for the targeted temperature).  70 seems to be a good target btw "Kissme"  For me I keep it at 72, but that's just me.

Keep the air still when starting the project.  Make sure that you do not change the temperature(typically for indoor).  A dramatic change in temperature can cause the whole project to completely fail.  You're going to want to keep everything as dust free as possible.  Don't try to over do the first project, use it as a stepping stone.  Anyways most of this is common sense. Hope this helps in anyway and good luck.

P.S. What strand are you starting with? I don't think I caught that.

Just stick the jars on a shelf in your kitchen. You do not need to incubate them.  They will colonize fine, even in a lower temp room. Don't worry about putting them near a heat source. I used the monotub/airpump combo and trust me, a Shotgun FC is waaaay better and you do not need any power to run it (unless you are using artificial light). Get a drill with a 1/4" bit, spend 5 minutes drilling some holes and you will never regret it.

The heater itself does not move any hair. It is a radiant space heater one of those long ones attached to the bottom of the wall.

Everyone keeps recommending SGFC the thing is I don't have a drill bit or a drill and can't afford one. Why do you say a SGFC is way better.  I read that if you build a SGFC wrong and alot of people do it sucks. So clean the walls in the room and around the door outside? Someone showed me there thanks for the heat bomb tech looks interesting.

This is a picture of a terrarium someone showed me and I saw pics of him fruiting well in it.
I will be growing some strand of cubensis. I dont know yet for sure my friend who I am seeing in a few days might give me a syringe otherwise ill be ordering them when i get the money together.

Thanks

There's a reason people keep pushing you towards a SGFC. They work great when properly built.
Borrow a drill, if you can, and follow the tek in shamanamba's sig. You won't regret it!

Good luck!

you could use a sharp pointed kinfe and carefully bore holes in it it wouldn't be pretty but it would work.
just lay it on it's side and bore holes from the inside over some carpet, I wouldn't recommend doing this you could cut yourself real bad.
but in a pinch thatz what I would do

You could maybe also try a soldering iron, or heat up a big screwdriver.

A SGFC is pretty much self regulating when it comes to maintaining relative humidity and Fresh Air Exchange; the two main factors in fruiting mushrooms. The thrid factor is light, but accroding to the gospel, humidity and FAE is way more important. Built properly, in a room with moving air(Desk fan or ceiling fan), all you really have to do is make sure the perlite stays damp.

it depends... you can either add more holes, cover up some holes, add more perlite, or take away some perlite.

No! SGFC's operate on the principle of convection. Having an air-moving device near a SGFC will mess up it's operation!
