Casing layer vs not using one for cubes
    #15750896 - 02/02/12 08:49 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys, was just wondering if it's necessary to use a casing layer for cubes when spawned to coir/Verm? If so what is an easy fail proof casing layer I could add to the bulk when it's colonized? Very new at bulk growing so I went without putting a thin layer of moist Verm at the top of my bulk when I spawned cause so many people said not to use one and very unnecessary with cubes. But the more I read, it definately suggest one to get a better even pinset and less moisture problem in tubs.

its not necessary with cubes...

Only use it if your having moisture problems...  even then wax paper will do the trick instead.

If the relative humidity in your grow-room is less than 35~40%, then it can be of beneficial aid

My understanding is that a healthy casing can increase the amount of available moisture to the fungus, thereby helping to increase yield. A casing can also provide a lot of small micro-environments in it's surface, allowing pins to form in otherwise less stable humidity levels.

But I definitely don't know everything about casings.  :um:

Do you mean:

yield = case < no case

or

moisture loss = case < no case

??

I've never cased a tub before, and have gone through 100+ tubs to date.

Those that use casing haven't reported a boost in yield so much as a more even top-pinset, vs side pins etc. Apparently the casing helps bring the flush together giving you a nice canopy. But that also could be rocked by MS (not using an isolate)

I've also heard that casing is a good idea if you twist and pull to harvest, and you case the 2nd flush to repair the craters left after harvest.

As I stated above, I've never cased, I still get fruits that grow from the craters, and I don't have any problems...
