The holes in the bottom can be said to be the most important ones. Your cakes produce warmth, causing a pressure differential that brings in new air thru the holes in the bottom and this thru the wet perlite increasing your humidity and exchanging air. Don't worry about the perlite falling. A very small bit will fall when you're loading it, but then it'll hold in. It won't really drip either.

Yes, you need to drill holes on all 6 sides. Once the perlite gets wet, it tends to stick together. Yes, you will get some perlite falling out of the bottom, but once it is setup and you are not moving it around or bumping it, the perlite will settle and not fall out the bottom. If you are really concerned, you can goto your local hardware store or walmart and buy some window screen. It comes in a big roll and is not too expensive. Cut out a piece and place it on the bottom before pouring in your Perlite.
Drilling holes in the bottom allows the air to travel up through the perlite and carry moisture with it into the chamber; keeping the RH high. That is why it is important to make sure the perlite stays damp. It is regulating your humidity for you.

do not cut your cakes there is absolutely no reason to do something like that just get a taller bin or work with what you have and keep that bin wet and humid it does need more holes thou

Correct me if I'm wrong.
You are.
Mycelium uses light as a source of energy. Mushrooms do not use light to 'know which way to grow' either. They will grow straight up, opposite gravity in the absence of light. Jars inoculated and then placed in a normal day/night light routine will colonize faster than those grown in complete darkness as well.
To the original poster, you need a taller terrarium to allow for the proper dispersion of gasses. RR
