First monotub questions.
    #15748139 - 02/01/12 05:00 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Been doing pf tek for awhile but now I have two rye grain jars that are fully colonized but I do not own a pressure cooker and the only substrate I have is vermiculite.

Ideas on what I should be doing?

Can I just boil substrates in prep for the tub?

How does the tub retain the right humidity during fruiting?

Thanks!

Sorry, but your myco-logic needs work, that said, vermiculite alone cannot be used as a substrate.

Here is the best monotub tek I have seen. Follow it exactly and you will do great!

How did you get 2 fully colonized rye jars without a pressure cooker? That's what I wanna know. Unless you ordered them...

Actually verm alone can be used as a substrate, prolly not the best choice but it would work, done it before...

Yeah, I order a bunch of sub jars online so they sent me the rye ones for free. Using rye is completely new to me and I only have growtent experience. :p Sooo without a pressure cooker what are my options?

I am a noob but i've done very well with Pf tek. Thanks for the link gref i'll print off those pages and get building.

Will the coir need to be sanitized in a pressure cooking?

that tek calls for just throwing your verm and coir in a 5 gal bucket and pouring boiling water on it and cover with lid and let set. its not true pasturization but it works. just look up the tek

Have you tested this?

I tried spawning to verm a while ago. It colonizes and I'm sure it offers minerals, but I got very weak/thin mycelium. I didn't have a non-verm to test biological efficiency, but the only places I saw mushrooms fruiting was directly off of the rye berries I used to spawn. In a second tub I mixed in the water from some fermenting straw, and the mycelium grew in twice as thick as the verm substrate - but it was still very weak looking.

You pasteurize coir, not sterilize. Sterilized bulk subs are pretty much guaranteed to contam. You'll be using about 1/2 a brick of coir.

Make sure you get some prints from your first grow! The first grow is always magical
