Troublesome Cake-Update

I had a couple threads about a cake which had stagnated production and had a layer of grey film around the middle which was suspected as being possible cobweb mold. I sprayed the cake with a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide (h202) and it appeared to go away. It looked like the cake had maybe gotten massively dehydrated at one point so I did a second resoak, only about 3/12 hours or so followed by a roll in fresh (precooked) vermiculite. Fruits have been popping up, but they start punier than normal and have not been developing. Maybe they're still dehydrated? Any recommendations?

Sounds like it's time to give up on that one.

from what I been reading on searching through the forums on small or puny fruiting bodys is a substrate moisture issue, contamination or genetics ;/ 3.5hrs I don't think is proper amount of hydration time I wouldn't give up on it let it run the first flush and if it dosn't contaminate dunk for a day then fruit it again.

Well, my last desperate gambit seemed to work. I put a bunch of fresh vermiculite around and especially on top of the cake, and from then on the fruits have managed to get water and grow. They won't be the most robust specimens, but they'll be something. Assuming there was cobwem mold and I got rid of it, this should have no harmful residual effect, right?

just be careful harvesting your fruit. make sure it's clean and you should be fine. I would throw it away, but if you insist on keeping at your cake (^ didnt look guessing its a 1/2 pint brfv cake)you need to dunk at least 12-15 hrs before the mycelium can get a drink (i dunk 24)! Mycelium is resilient that's why it rules the world! but weaker unhealthier body will have weaker unhealthier fruit... not to say your fruit wont bear with it what you want from it

not true man handling a fully colonized cake will not contaminate only bruise it. If a cake is contamed it was probably there to begin with. Contams can be hiding inside the cake where you cannot see them. Once a cake is birthed it is open to the billions of contaminate spores that are floating aimlessly around.

Hmm, so I shouldn't use the fruits at all? Is that because it would be dangerous, or is it because they wouldn't have potency?

I said in my experience.. I had 4 cakes, 2 of which I left alone completely (only time I would move them around was harvest and dunk/roll) and the other 2 cakes I would move them around all the time, trying to see pins, placing them in different places in the SGFC and those two contaminated after the first flush, when the other ones lasted 3 flushes..

I mean if you already have decent fruits go ahead and keep it.. but if the cake is looking weak and not healthy (considering your first post) just toss it and focus on more batches
