Something that confuses me about wild prints
    #1574610 - 05/24/03 01:48 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Maybe I'm missing something. In Moe's outdoor tek, he says that outdoor cultivation is less prone to contams because of things like UV rays and whatnot, and that indoors the spore rate is much higher (enclosed spaces etc). For example, green mold is more of an indoor problem.

However, I keep reading that wild prints are much more likely to be dirty than indoor ones. This seems contradictory. How come outdoor cultivation is less likely to contam, yet prints from outside are more likely to be contammed? My only explanation might be that you start an outdoor grow from spawn, which spreads faster than spores, and thus competing molds have much less chance to take over.

But then why would indoor casings, which are started with spawn too, be more likely to contam than outdoor beds? Both take several weeks to colonize the bulk substrates if I understand correctly. Seems contradictory. What if one made a print outdoors in a transparent baggie, then sealed it and brought it indoors after it's sealed? Would the UV rays etc help to keep the print clean?

Thanks

outdoors all contaminants are present but in such a balanced way only nature can provide. the fruitbodies of outdoor mushrooms are more than likely teeming with all sorts of little nasties that when brought indoors, away from the natural balance, will quickly multiply and effectively contaminate your efforts. it is possible to collect a sterile spore print from outdoor mushrooms but one should always assume an outdoor print to be "dirty" and use some method (like agar) to effectively isolate a "clean" culture. also, one can harvest a specimen just about to break it's veil, take a culture from within the cap under the veil, and be relatively certain of a sterile clone. Again, agar can verify sterility as well multiply the amount of usable culture.
